Iceland has been one of those locations that I have wanted to do for a long time. So after I bought my new G4 Challenge Discovery 3 from Land Rover events this year I decided that this was a prime opportunity to "head north".
After a few day on the Faroe Islands and an overnight ferry crossing from Torshaven, landfall was made in the tiny Fjord port of Seydisfjord.
There is not a lot to say about Seydisfjord ... its just a small port at the head of the Fjord which forms a safe port for the Smyril Line ferry, MF Norruna. Arriving each week on a Thursday I guess the sleep village does not see much activity outside of this!!
The ferry arrives around mid morning in Seydisfjord, and once arrived it requires some negotiation with the customs.
Some useful tips here for expeditioners:
Although classed as Europe do not expect to just drive through the green lane and drive off ! You have a few formalities here!!
Do NOT take large amounts of food in with you - there are restrictions on alcohol too and many expeditioners with large campers were getting stripped of fresh fruit, cheese, meats etc as well as being made to pay for importing alcohol.
If your carrying lots of fuel expect the same questions! So carry empty jerry cans only ... there are plenty of places to fill up before you hit open ground!
I was asked about how long i was staying and received a small blue customs sticker which seems to be a notice about fuel and road taxes exemption.
Carry all documents that you need and have them ready including car documents for registration, tax, insurance etc
I was also carrying radio equipment inc CB ... make sure you have the necessary licence available - Iceland btw has no CB licence .. I carry a carnet for the CB too whilst in EU anyhow. I also have my ham radio licence in my document folder.
After clearance from customs we headed off into the icy high ground to the next town called Egilstadir .
** I have added some video to my page now of the trip **
I must also add....
Im not related to this publisher in anyway ... but its one spectacular film! If you like Iceland well I guess you will like this!
