Our Luxurious Room

After two nights on the pub crawl, the organisers began to know us and told us that one of their friends could find us a place.

We were introduced to a guy called Adam who took us on a walk through some very dodgy and very narrow streets to a guy who didnt actually give us his name. He did look rather suspicious. He led us to a large doorway and then up 5 flights of tightly wound stairs to me met by Sacha. A bleached blonde German lad wearing his tighty whiteys...

Just as the horrific sight was shocking us, two very tall men squeezed under the doors and down the stairs wearing their traditional Bavarian clothes.....had we just been lad to the site of a German porn set?? One without women??

No. From behind the Venitian windows that were oddly placed between the sitting room and a bedroom came Simon loosely wrapped in his pink silken robe.

As it turns out Siomn is from London. Top bloke actually. He owns the apartement we were in and offered to put a roof over our heads. Better yet, it turns out that he owns several bars in town and clubs. He either owned the Travel Bar who ran the pub crawls or he knew the guy well enough.

Now, as for the two rather tall Germans, turns out they are called Journey Men. They leave their village if they are not married and travel the world to learn their trade. Apparently this is where the term "a jack of all trades, master of none" comes from as they work in many fields and will do any jobs for room and board but are never allowed to ask for money. They are not allowed within 351 miles of their home town. Whatever about the 350 miles, but I feel that the 1 mile is very personal.

This limitation applies to flying above their home town. On top of all this, the must wear the traditional clothes, not leutherhausen but more like the clothes an Hamish person wears, including the hat.

Things were really wierd in the this apartment. Then again. That is why we travel. Isn't it?? Travel to find new experiences, the dont get any newer or different than this place!

We soon came to affectionately call Simon the Godfather of Barcelona!

He seemed to have his hands in everything. Maybe this is because for the next 5 days we spent all our time and money either in his bars and restaurants or his friends! It was still an experience and a half getting to skip every line for every club we attempted to get into.

We had so much fun in Barcelona.

Me, Jimmy & Joyce
It truly is a beautiful city. From the awe inspiring Sangrada Familia, Gaudi's yet to be completed church, to another awe inspiring building of a different kind, the Nou Camp or Camp Nou has it is called here.

The beach front is stunning but does not hold a patch on the fantastic Las Ramblas with its ever changing street performers, many of whom are of a very high calibre.

The barria gothica is stunning. Just remember to look up occasionally. As legend has it, some of the houses have yet to get adequate sanitation leaving a bucket and the window to do the job. I do not know if this is true or if there is a particularly drunk gentleman wandering the streets doing all the damage himself. I swear I was not that man. We had a toilet in our apartment of wonder.

I had an amazing time in Barca. The two Liverpool boys were great fun, so happy to have met them. All the other people we met along the way really added to the experience and reaffirmed my belief that my friends and family were wrong about the negative aspects of travelling alone. I have met some amazing people and Im only away from home a few days so far.

Things may have just gone from worse to better....
