Visiting Wawel-hill

Photo exhibition in the Planty park. I thought this was just to funny. "John Paul II holds a koala bear". That comment is just so unnecessary! We all can see what he's holding right? But it is a great picture anyway :)
The weather still isn't that good this morning, so we decide to putt of our city walk for yet another day, and visit Wawel hill. After a short walk we arrive at the site. Wawel is portrayed as the must see attraction in Krakow, as it holds a very important position in the history of Poland. So my expectations are set pretty high for this. After buying tickets we continue our way to the Lost Wawel exhibition, and further on to the state rooms, the crown treasury and finally the private royal apartments. To end we visit the cathedral and it's tombs too.

Probably all Polish people will hate me when I write this, but I am highly disappointed about this whole site.
Wawel Tower from the downhill at the entrance gate.
If you read my review you'll understand better why. I don't think Wawel was worth the money we spend for it. It might be an important place with a rich history, but that doens't make it beautiful.

After returning from our visit we felt even so disappointed, my father stated he was by now fed up with castles and churches. His next vacation he didn't want to visit any more of these. That pictures it, as he is usually very much into historical buildings and architecture. I must say I felt just the same.

So we have a drink at a terrace just to forget about our bad day. Even worse, we are pretty much done with Krakow at this point. We still have to make our walks through the old town and the Jewish quarter, but apart from that, there isn't much more to visit. Seems like we have way to much time to spend here.

I've read in so many books 5 days isn't nearly enough to get a good impression of Krakow, but this isn't true. One day to walk around the town and visit the churches, half a day to visit Wawel, and then you're done. I know I do sound critical today, I really am. I haven't yet fallen in love with Krakow at all. Up till now, it hasn't really impressed me. That is, expect for the Maria Basilica. I don't much like the atmosphere either, and the weather doesn't make things look better. There isn't much fun in strolling around a picturesque old town watching stuff from under an umbrella and freezing because you're all soaked with rain. So today is my down-day. I really feel like I should have better stayed at home. Poland is just not a place for me. Next year I'll pick the travel destination myself.

To fill our afternoon we stroll around some more, only to pass by a vinoteca that advertised at the main square.
The cathedral is a complete mingling of different materials, parts, towers and forms. I didn't like the design that much...
Maybe give it a try? Bad idea. This place is way overpriced and the portions you get are simply pathetic.  I mean, 10 PLN for one nip of Baileys? You can't be serious! Because honestly, that was all there was in the glass. No ice and one little nip of the drink. There you are, finished. If we want something else? No thanks, just the bill would be fine...

In the evening we have diner in a touristy Grill restaurant. That wasn't my choice really, as a vegetarian. Luckily they sell pizza calzone too, which isn't too bad. Yet my mothers dish is just horrible and so we decide that after this terrible day, we really need something good to turn things around. So where do we go? To the Trattoria Soprano restaurant we went yesterday, of course :) I had lemon cake this time. Simply wonderful. Without a doubt this is the highlight of today. Sorry Wawel hill, you just got beaten by Italian dessert...

Italian again?! Haha.

Kim, if i have a chance to visit Poland, your blog will be my guide book!
