We took an 11-days trip from Krakow over Zakopane to Warsaw. It was a great holiday, stuffed with amazing architecture, authentic quarters, breathtaking nature and lovely cheesecakes and desserts :D

Day trip to Morskie Oko

After how wonderful Kinga's first tip turned out to be yesterday, we decided to see her second advice, Morskie Oko, too. This little lake is out of town so we had to catch a bus to bring us nearer. The trip is rather short and the sights on the way are really beautiful.

Visitors to the Morskie Oko (I've been told it's name means Eye of the Sea) are dropped of some 8 or 9 kilometers away from the lake. From there on you enter the national park and so cars can't go any further. For those who don't want to make the small climb (the walk is rather boring, following a paved tarmac road) there are also horse carriages to bring you up. The rides to the lake are said to be more expensive than the rides back, but we didn't buy one so I can't tell for sure.

It is a very easy stroll to reach Morskie Oko, and it is definitely worth it. The sky was rather clouded the whole start of the day, but miraculously it opened up when we reached the lake. The place is very beautiful indeed. The water is so clear and is surrounded by the high peaks of the Tatra mountains. Truly an amazing setting.

Close to the lake are plenty of places to have a drink or something to eat. So first thing we did was have a snack. After that we took a closer look at the lake. From the point were all tourists arrive it is really buzzy. The small rocky beach in front of it is full of people taking pictures and enjoying the view. But of course one doesn't need to stay right there. Several walking routs depart or pass by this place. So are long ones going up in the mountains and others are short strolls through the neighborhood.
Still snow on the mountains!
We just planned for a walk around the lake.

This is again a very simple route, but unlike the walk to Morskie Oko, this one offers amazing sights and is very calm and peaceful. It think this place must be most beautiful in spring, when snow is melting in the mountains and many little and bigger waterfalls run downhill. There still were some little waterfalls now, but not so many. It didn't matter however. We really had a great time walking around this beautiful lake. We've been lying for quite a long time just aside in the sun, gazing up to the blue skies and the mountain peaks. Only when the sun disappeared behind a new load of clouds we decided to go.

At some point it looked like it was going to start raining again, but luckily it didn't. We reached the exit of the national park very quick and dry :) The place was by now crowded with minibuses to drive tourists back to Zakopane.
Even though dozens of people arrived at the parking lot at the same time there was no need to wait. We rode back and enjoyed the sunset from out of the van, and all the mountains and valleys were covered in beautiful colors.

To end our stay in Zakopane we had diner in the restaurant were my father had his first Oscypek yesterday. The place is right down the main road Krupowki and is called Karcma Po Zboju. It was a wonderful place, and we regretted not to have came here yesterday either. It was the perfect ender of an amazing stay in the Zakopane Tatra mountains. I'm sure I'll come back here again one day, to enjoy more of it!

A rather short ride through nice scenery
If you want to take a day trip to the Morskie Oko, you might best take a minibus to the entrance of the national park.

These buses leave in front of the main bus station of Zakopane and don't cost that much (I believe it was around 9 PLN one way). The ride is fast and comfortable and takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

These minibuses ride frequently all day long in both directions. You'll get dropped of at the national parks entrance, were you have to pay a small entrance fee (see my blog about Morskie Oko). From there on you can start walking to the lake. In the evening dozens of buses come waiting here again to bring tourists back to Zakopane. But also during the rest of the day drivers wait here to bring you home.

Morskie Oko is a lake in the Tatra national park, about half an hour drive outside Zakopane. It is fairly worth the ride though, as this is a very beautiful place.

The minibuses (see my review on how to reach Morskie Oko) drop you of at the entrance of the national park. From here on your walk to the lake starts. To enter the park you must pay a small admission fee of about 3 PLN, and dogs or motorized vehicles are not allowed.

The walk to Morskie Oko is about 8 to 9 kilometers long. You can do it on foot (it is a little steep but not much) or take a ride by horse carriage. Most people walk up, but the horses have a busy job too, bringing people up and down. I don't know the right prices for those, but it is said that trips up (to the lake) are more expensive than trips down. It is though easy to walk, even without proper walking shoes. You don't have to be a hiker to make this trip at all. The road is paved with tarmac and therefore the route is quite boring. That is the only downside about it.

Arriving at the lake is though very rewarding. There are plenty of places to eat here (just 1 kilometer before the arrival, and at a wooden house just beside the lake). Several walking routes start from here too. It is a bit useless to walk to the lake and than just walk back. The sights from the arrival point are nice but the most beautiful views are to be seen from the other sides of the Morskie Oko.

Luckily there is a very easy, yet rocky walking path around the lake. It isn't hard but it can't be done with, for example, a buggy. I can't remember how much time it took us to walk around. I don't think the walk takes that long, but we stopped several times and also got off route at some points, so we took longer to enjoy the scenery.

To end I just wanted to say I absolutely enjoyed this day trip. Morskie Oko is a beautiful place and a very nice day trip from Zakopane. Hightly recommended!

a very cozy place with great food and friendly service
Karcma Po Zboju is a very nice restaurant in the heart of Zakopane, at the main street. The house itself is already very nice, all made of wood. There is a small terrace outside to have a snack or drink, but the interior is much worth a visit too.

Also inside, everything is made of wood. Tables are long and most of them have benches instead of chairs. There is a fireplace and in the evenings musicians play nice music now and then.

Staff is very friendly, all dressed in traditional Polish clothing, and very helpful. Not all of them speak English very well, but the menu is translated so that isn't really a problem. There is a great choice of dishes, and many of them are traditional Polish cuisine. Prices are rather cheap.

This really is a nice place to spend the evening. We could have stayed here for hours, enjoying the good food and drinks. Perfect service in a perfect location. I highly recommend this place!
