Neptune with palace.
Our day trip to Versailles was disappointing.  It was bitterly cold and windy, the fountains had been turned off for the season, and part of the palace was under renovation.  My wife put it in even simpler terms, "What a big waste of time!"  I wouldn't go quite that far, but we were definitely disappointed.  Sorry Louis!

Versailles is located not far from Paris, maybe 30 - 45 minutes.  The palace was sinfully opulent!  Most of the ceilings were painted, gold leaf everywhere, tapestries, paintings, etc.  The Sun King had waaaaaay too much money.  Perhaps this is why the French revolted??  For those who had to know, a self-guided tour with headphones was available.
The famous Hall of Mirrors.
I just fought the crowds and gazed.  The Hall of Mirrors (the highlight) was at the end of the indoor tour and partially under renovation.  My picture doesn't look bad, but I am halfway down the hall and it doesn't come close to the grandeur I was hoping for.

The gardens outside were clever geometric designs, and quiet walkways hidden by tall rows of hedges.  There are several fountains, the Apollo probably the most famous.  It was nearly a quarter mile from the palace down a long avenue of grass and footpaths.  Again, dozens of scupted figures dot the landscape.  It was very busy and crowded that day.  I don't think I want to fight the crowds when it is warm and sunny with the fountains in full glory.
