Versailles is located not far from Paris, maybe 30 - 45 minutes. The palace was sinfully opulent! Most of the ceilings were painted, gold leaf everywhere, tapestries, paintings, etc. The Sun King had waaaaaay too much money. Perhaps this is why the French revolted?? For those who had to know, a self-guided tour with headphones was available.
The gardens outside were clever geometric designs, and quiet walkways hidden by tall rows of hedges. There are several fountains, the Apollo probably the most famous. It was nearly a quarter mile from the palace down a long avenue of grass and footpaths. Again, dozens of scupted figures dot the landscape. It was very busy and crowded that day. I don't think I want to fight the crowds when it is warm and sunny with the fountains in full glory.
