Another taste of one of the 'Somalia' - Somaliland
January 9, 2009
The road from the border was a bit a pain, and there were many controls on the way. But we were doing it, roaming on a crowded taxi car to Hargeysa (Hargeisa), the capital city of a 'non-yet official' country: Somaliland. The drive through the arid desert was quite a sight, a few km from the Ethiopian Border (Wajaale) some sort of Ostrich stood by the road... the actual only sight for miles.
A good two hours later we drove into Hargeisa itself, I was deeply awaiting that since the car and road was not that comfortable at all and the many police barricade check along the road (nearing 10 in total) ended up being a bit of a pain with many questions in relation of us, the lone two white people in a right-wheel handed British type car filled with Somalis men and older lady sitting in the trunk making the crossing as well.
Nonetheless to say that I was happy to be out of Ethiopia for once and especially felt the thrill on going somewhere which is far out of the tourist path. I was both curious about the city and country, its people... and definitely, how we would perceive it and be perceived.

So the news will come soon, we survived and had a great time with a utterly friendly and welcoming population. We encountered some technical problem being in this country. But at the end, it was all wonderful.

Wonderful Service in Central Somaliland
We arrived straight at Oriental Hotel when we made our way into Hargeysa. The trip was long and the quality of the facilities were just marbelous. The staff is helpful and polite that was great, we were two and were expecting a normal room renting price (since we were on tight budget), so the added charge was the only deception we had.
Running water and food at the hotel are perfect! I fully recommend that hotel if you have the desire to be in at walking distance of about everything and yet have the comfort of any other resort in Hargeysa. It is also the best place to receive support in planning your stay in the country.
We met with the Manager later that day from whom we received a lot of tips about our stay in Hargeysa and help for the continuation of our journey in accordance to our means. That was very welcome and made it a wonderful stay.
