Where's Nessy?

The Victorian Market

It's the Monday moring in Inverness and I'm already shaking with the pneumonia.  I think if I do develop the man flu and a subsequent epidermic of plague follows, we should all blame the hostel in Inverness.  That or the dip into Loch Ness!

I parked the car in the multistorey and met up with everyone else to get some breakfast.  We had a bit of time on our hands so went for another walk around the city.  The weather had cheered up and so we got some good views of and from the castle.  We also had a quick stop off at the Victorian Market so we could all get a few postcards (of hairy cuws mainly - haha) and some, always necessary, chocolate.

It was getting on for about midday and it was time to head out to Loch Ness.  It was here we had to say goodbyes to Ashley who was (eventually) going to head back to Edinburgh one way or another.

Loch Ness was only 9 miles away so we got there really quickly.  In fact, timing was so good, we made a 12 O'Clock Jacodite Boat trip through the Loch.  I just had enough time to take off my socks and shoes and wade in to test the water.  At this time it didn't seem too bad.  I'd been threatening to do a skinny dip the previous night.

The boat tour was an hour long and takes you to Urquhart Castle which is the 3rd most visited castle in Scotland after Edinburgh and Stirling.  A few Loch Ness facts: (1) It is 24 miles long and 2 miles wide.

The Town House
  (2) At it's deepest it is 750ft and is the largest body of water in the British Isles.  (3) Nessy does not live there!  It's frikin' freezing and so if she ever existed, she'll either be dead from pneumonia or she's buggered off and is sunbathing in the Azores.

After the tour, we all decided to wade into the black waters.  You can get ankle deep, but then it's all or nothing.  The steepness of the drop after a metre or two would mean you'll be submerged if you walked on the rocks.  We were all complaining about stinging ankles from the bitter cold and so the full on dip was not going to happen.  Bad things happen to men in cold water!

I loved it at the Loch, but after some lunch it was time to leave and drive to the Isle of Skye for the evening.  The drive was once again so pretty as we powered through the gorges, past Lochs Cluani and Duich.  I'm not sure how much justice the photos actually do for the gorgeous views.

We had a short break at Eilean Donan Castle for a few pictures and to stretch the legs a bit.  We were quite close to the Skye bridge after this point and only had Loch Alsh to get past.  We had made brilliant time of the journey again and had been so lucky with the late Autumn weather.
