Living the good life in the Chateau
July 19, 2008
After leaving Arras, we avoided the péage again and drove the backroads towards Saint-Omer and Tilques. The sun came out and things improved.
Tilques proved to be a little place in the middle of nowhere, about 10km from Saint-Omer. The Chateau was easy to find and looked absolutely stunning. We were hoping to get a room in the chateau and not in the more modern building next door. We got lucky. We got the room on the top floor, right in the middle of the building, which gave us a beautifull view. The room was pretty impressive itself, but then, this was a 4 star hotel, one we wouldn't be able to afford to stay in under normal circumstances.

This is a beautiful castle and makes for a nice romantic get-away if you can spare the cash. It is, after all a 4 star hotel. Fortunately, internet travel companies sometimes offer you a great deal, like a '2 nights including breakfast and 3 course dinner on night of arrival' package for 160 Euro. A steal, considering the room itself normally costs 220 Euro a night and your 3 course dinner would normally set you back at least 43 Euro per person. You do the math.
But Hell, let's forget about the cost for a while. The whole castle just breathes atmosphere. The 'parc' is nice and well kept, although if you decide to walk around the pond you will, at one point, either have to double back or climb over a fence to continue on your little stroll.
There is also a small tennis court and an indoor pool. Plenty of parking and the domain comes with 2 peacocks who will try their utmost best to run in front of your car the moment you leave the chateau and drive onto the road.
Let me at this point mention that you don't really want to drive to Tilques or Saint-Omer because there is absolutely nothing to see or do. Head to the coast. It's only 45 minutes away.
So, superior rooms. Very nicely decorated. Friendly and assisting staff. The Chateau has a nice bar and their coffee is great.
Next door to the Chateau is the restaurant in the converted stables. You will not regret having dinner there (or breakfast for that matter). It is outstanding. It is Heaven. Words cannot describe the food or the service. Perfection does indeed exist, right here, at Chateau Tilques.
This is the good life, if you can afford it. And if not, get a coupon, like we did!
