Traversing historic Route 66
July 27, 2008
We passed by several landmarks through Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico. We drove along Route 66 for about 30 miles in Oklahoma. We passed by farmland, cows seeking the only shade for miles near creeks and ravines, horses laying on their sides trying to cool down from the 102 degree heat, signs pocketed with bullet holes. Most of the time we were the only car on the road, so we had plenty of chances to stop and take photos.
The guide book I had gotten from Amazon, which received rave reviews, was and wasn't helpful. The author described several landmarks to drive over or by, and at least one was a beauty. Called Pony Bridge, the bridge was featured in the Grapes of Wrath movie.
What didn't work for us were some of the suggested detours, desribed in the next entry.
