The pool at the Pemba Beach Hotel
Pemba is definitely not one of the more westernized towns, but it sits on a stretch of Mozambique's most pristine beaches. I checked into the Pemba Beach hotel on my arrival, but didn't realize how beautiful it was until I explored the property the next morning. It just never ceases to amaze me how heavenly the beaches are in Mozambique...and yet, when you travel inland it reminds you more of hell because of the great poverty and disease that strickens the people.
Pemba will be my last stop before the trip to Kili. We are working in more than a dozen outlying villages, some of them almost a half-day's drive. We are packing the vehicle with sleeping bags, tents, food, and other provisions for an overnight stay in some of these places (probably more than one overnight stay). We make our first trip in the morning, so today I will splurge in this exotic paradise beside the Indian Ocean.
