TB Meetup: Songkran in Khao San
April 13, 2009
Since Layla and I are staying at the same hostel (HQ in Silom) and she was transferring to Khao San early today, I decided to help her move and start early in Khao San.
Good thing i did that since the festivities in the road were cut short a little after lunch. blame the red shirts. such party poopers.
met up with siti and karen around the corner of Rambuttri infront of the pizza place they can't find. they were actually standing infront of it but they claim not to see it while i was giving directions on the phone. LOL!
anyway on the way back to khao san road, how annoying is it to have this kid shoot at my cigarette! unfortunately for him, my cigarette lived to see another 5 puffs. the entire time songkran, many have attempted to shoot my cigarette with their watergun. none were successful. beat that! wet all of me but not my cig.
The girls and I we're taking it slow, so we had breakfast first and some chit chat. After that the water fight began. I never imagined songkran would be this fun. Had i not met up with my travbuddies it would have been a different story. me, wet, alone. that's sad. but thank you so much to layla, karen, siti "the lady in red", chelsea, raz, and a whole bunch of TBS i've met the night before and during the songkran itself.
I forgot my other lens at the hostel so by lunch time i excused myself from the group and took a tuktuk back to bangkok. along the way i got even more wet. people kept throwing water at me and the tuktuk driver. the driver asked me for 300. I know it's too much, but it was difficult to get a ride so i didn't even try to complain.
as i arrived in silom, i took a breather back at the hotel, smoke some cigs. had some thai iced tea. changed to my 70-300mm lens so i can get candid close ups of people. As i was doing that, Layla texted me that party's over in khao san due to the protest. Hence, I just went the hotel and enjoyed Silom festivities.
I always have this problem about approaching people to take their photographs (that's why i needed the 70-300mm lens) but during Songkran, I didn't even have to ask people. They would willingly pose for me... and having my name in thai script tattooed on my arm really helped. I just keep on hearing my name from directions and that's where i point my camera. haha! that was really amazing.
In the evening, I called on Vaness and asked him if he would like to join me get even more wet in Silom. He willingly obliged. And so we had dinner and then went on to have more fun just shooting people and all. haha!
