Day trip from Madrid to Toledo!
Today we decided to take a day trip to Toledo just outside of Madrid rather then hang around Madrid. Plus everyone we spoke to said we had to go to Toledo as it's so beautiful. Getting up and getting ready to go was really weird without having Lauro around. The group had finally been split up! Alex was supposed to leave as well but he missed his flight and left when we left to go to the trainstation, to go to the airport to get a new ticket.
At the station we had to get a ticket to wait in line and the queue was massive! We ended up waiting over an hour just to buy our train tickets. The next train was at 12:30 and of course we get called up to the ticket counter at 12:35! The next train wasn't until 1:50pm so we had a bit of time to kill at the station.
Eventually we got our train and took the half hour journey to Toledo. Once at the station we decided to walk up to the city centre rather then take the bus. Thank god I was wearing my runners! Well really, thank Mark who is a drunken idiot and lost one of his shoes meaning he had to wear my flip flops and I had to wear my runners. Let the idiot get the blisters!!
First we stopped to get ice cream, first things first right!?! and then from there we headed to the palace which turned out to be closed. So we sat around for a minute before getting up and wandering off somewhere else. Toledo is a really beautiful place but it is so touristy. The whole place is completley catered for tourists and thats all the people you see basically. As we were walking around we realised we were quite hungry so we started looking for somewhere to eat as well but being the touristy place that it is all the restaurants had very high prices.
We found one place that was a bit cheap so we stopped in there. And cheap it was! Oh man was the food horrible! It was disgusting. Every single one of us did not like our food. Mark and I shared a paella which was really watery and gross. The chicken that was in it tasted rotten and I actually had to spit it out it was that gross. And Hannah's fish that she ordered was just rank.
After lunch our main goal was to find the big cathedral. Eventually we did and it was nice. From there we didn't really know what to do so we just decided to head back to Madrid. We weren't really sure what attractions Toledo had to offer besides the general view and feel of the city but we came and saw how gorgeous it was and we were quite impressed. Again we walked back to the station rather then taking the bus but it was a really nice walk and we got some gorgeous photos.
The 6:30 train back to Madrid was full so we had to get the 7:30 train and had some time to kill in the station. Luckily there was a bar and we got some drinks and passed the hour by arguing over if the bar tender was male or female. Honestly you couldn't tell!!! I think the jury is still out on the final verdict but I am thinking "it" was a man.
Once back in Madrid we got the metro back to Sol station as we all really really wanted some KFC mashed potatoes and we knew there was some there. On the way back from Sol to the hostel we stopped off at pretty much every single street performer there was. We were really interested all the people who painted on the tiles with just their hands. It was amazing! Ruby bought about 3 of the paintings and Hannah, Jeff, and I all got one.
After the 2nd or 3rd painter you could tell Mark and Ben were pretty fed up with watching so they went back to the hostel. From there we carried on watching more street vendors. Eventually though we got to ones that were selling clothes and jewellery and thats where Jeff threw in the towel and left us girls to it.Once we eventually made our way back to the hostel we stopped at the internet cafe and checked our emails for an hour. We got back to the hostel around 10pm and when we did Mark was so wasted. Apparently he did not waste any time chugging down the cartons of Sangria from the time he got back to the hostel to when we arrived. We were all hanging out in the common area and it was pretty funny watching him make a huge ass out of himself as he was the only drunk person there.
We all kind of ditched the poor drunk guy and went to bed and locked our hoste room door until he came stumbling along pounding on the door to open up. Ruby being the nice girl that she is (OK she really wanted to go out for a smoke) went out with him so he would leave us alone. Now I wasn't there to witness this glorious chain of events as I was quite sick myself (damn the rotten paella!) but apparently Mark was quite passed out in the streets of Madrid with Jeff and Ruby with randoms taking pictures of him. And then he did the classic Mark and vomitted all over the ground in front of him...and then fell in it.
I only got to see the aftermath with the sick all over him wathching Jeff attempting to get him in the shower. Haha oh you should have seen the look of disgust on his face lol. Eventually we threw out Marks clothes...poor guy has been on the trip only 2 days and has already lost a pair of shoes, jeans, and a t-shirt! and then after that we went to bed.
