Mountain Bike Adventure!

Dien Khanh Travel Blog › entry 14 of 19 › view all entries

I step into the unknown - a continent that I can not blend in to, nor a language that I can attempt to get by with. Good thing everybody knows English....but that takes some of the fun away from exploring Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam.

Mountain Bike Adventure!

This farmer spoke some English - Very helpful. A moto driver gave me a lift up out of this valley.

Now the trip got even better.  Down hill on the mountain bike through the hills and valleys that I do not even know the name of.  I didn’t even have to pedal at times, just zooming down mountains like a kid on a roller coaster for hours.  The down hill ended, and I pedaled passed houses in the country.  Kids would run out and wave and try and speak some English.

This is a very new road I was on.  They were ecstatic to see a tourist.  I rode on and on through these towns and past rivers and over bridges.  I was exhausted again and it was about 5 pm in the town of Khanh Vinh.  I asked and there were no hotels.  I looked in the internet café on google earth as of my route to the next big town…15 miles.  The locals loved google earth, as I showed them my house in Chicago, and we could kind of find their town.  It was starting to get dark.

I finished my coffee, took a picture of some funny kids by my bike, and took off.

Check out the dude in the mirror. Mirrors help with the dangerous curves on the mountain road.
I had to beat the sun.  I rode as the sun went down and dusk turned to night.  With no lights, I couldn’t see well.  I could hear Vietnamese radio and propaganda blasting out of country speakers.  No town, no hotel, just me and the Vietnamese countryside…shhiitt.  I took out my trusty Panasonic flashlight to help guide me on the road.  Finally, a country hotel.  I ask if they have rooms, and guess what……this is South East Asia…..of course it is a sex hotel (you can see the picture on travbuddy).  Ssssshhhhhiiiiiittttt.

Back on the bike with the flashlight.  Finally the town.  I ride and ask.  No hotel for 6 miles.  I am exhausted.  The people let me keep my bike in their shop, and have their son moto me to the hotel area.  Vietnam " what great people.  The only hotels that we found in Dien  Khanh were sex hotels, so that is where I slept.

The next morning I ride the bike into Nha Trang, take a dip in the South China Sea.

Kids wishing me well on a coffee break.
Who would have thought, the craziest solo thing I do on my travels, and I meet the nicest most hospitable people and have a great experience.  The Vietnamese are great - Fuck Jack Kerouac!  He was an asshole anyway.
