The journey to Mandalay was more of an adventure than we were anticipating.  To begin with we had to take an alternative route in the taxi due to flooding near Inle Lake during the night and had to intercept the bus at a village further along.  Initially we were pleased to have caught the bus until it broke down twice before breaking down for a third and final time in the middle of nowhere.  We were all loaded onto a passing pick-up where I had to sit on the roof and Linda was hanging out the back choking on dust and fumes.  After nearly four hours we arrived at a small bus station still two hours from Mandalay where we swapped to another bus for the final leg of the journey.

We stayed at the Royal Guesthouse which was great value at six dollars per night for bed and breakfast.  On our first day we joined up with Mark and Kim, a Dutch couple we met up with on the previous days journey.  We visited the main sights in the city which included a couple of teak monasteries, two palaces, a few pagodas and a walk up Mandalay Hill.

The following day the four of us and a Hungarian called Stephen hired a taxi and driver for the day and went to the three ancient cities of Sagaing, Inwa and Amarapura.  On our last day we visited the fourth ancient city of Mingun which we reached by a nice boat journey up the river.
