Oxford - England, United Kingdom
August 24, 2008
In the Eagle and Child pub in Oxford. The Inklings met here. This group included J.R.R. Tolkien (The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, etc. and C.S.Lewis (The Chronicles of Narnia, etc.). Really cool to have been in the same spot they use to meet.
I checked in here at the hostel in Oxford then jumped on the computer. When Kate, a fellow hosteler here from Canada looked up the Christ Church here and said that it's last admission was to be at 16.30 we jumped up and practically ran there (we only had 10 min). We got there at 16.30 exactly, but they already had the closed signs up. I was upset because there are scenes from the HP films that were shot there and I was hoping to get a glimpse (I have sinced scheduled my train out tomorrow with enough time in the morning to allow me to go back and check it out haha).
Next we walked down to The Eagle and Child where Tolkien and C.S. Lewis met with their fellow Inklings. I snapped some photos out front and in what is known as the "Rabbit Room" where they use to actually SIT!! We also went over to the pub across the street where they are said to have "changed allegiance to" in 1962 called the Lamb & Flag.
After doing some more walking arond and a stop at the market I headed back to the hostel. There was a BBQ here tonight. £4 all you can eat. I had my own, cheaper food, but there was obviously left overs I snacked on and it was fun hanging out with everyone.
That's about it for Oxford.. for today anyway. I am sure if I hadn't had such a long train ride it might have been more eventful, but it was fun and sufficient nonetheless. I was pleased with the city and glad I got to stop in to pay it a visit.
Edit: Added photos from 8.25.08 as a new entry
