Shall we pop up to his room and say, "Hi Mum!" ??
Met up with my real life and work friends, Michelle (gemmi05), Lisa (Lisabrook21), Jen, Scott, and Melanie (Mellemel8) and RJ (RJ1982ster) at Dona Maria's in downtown for good, authentic Mexican food like I grew up with! It was great to finally hang out with Lisa, Michelle, and Jen...all at the same time! LOL. It was the first time since I got here that we had all been together! Jen was supposed to come bridesmaid dress shopping with us on Saturday but she was not feeling well for most of the week so she wasn't able to make it! Sal (Sincitytraveler) was supposed to show up too but work was chaotic after being gone on vacation so he was unable to show! :-(
Dinner was a riot! RJ was the only one who had not met all my real life work friends and he fit right in.....
in fact, I think RJ was a little surprised at the crazy comments from the crazy insurance claims people! HA HA. OMG, we ended up eating soooo much that I thought I was going to die before we left the restaurant. Lisa and I had a few margaritas so we were being sassy and silly on the way home. Poor Michelle, we got to her house and one of her lovely neighbors continuously parks bad so they were somewhat blocking her driveway and Lisa actually wrote a note to get out of the driveway and never park there again and left it on the truck! We just hope Michelle's tires don't get slashed now or something! YIKES!Mel and I were going to meet up with my friend Kim (Bundysmom) and her old friend Brad who was in town for the Harley Davidson convention.
Melanie and I kinda wanted to go dancing but I didn't feel like really dressing up and going out so we opted to check out some of the bars at the Mandalay Bay and grab a vodka at the Req Square since Melanie had never been there. How on earth can she be the self-proclaimed Grey Goose queen and never been to the main vodka place in town!We arrived at Red Square only to feel completely underdressed when we looked inside and saw people in suits and dresses. We were still in capris and flip flops! We ended up ordering some of the most expensive drinks ever.....Mel had Belvedere, on the rocks and I tried their new infused kiwi coconut, on the rocks. Mel's was $16 and mine was $13. Yeah, mighty stiff prices on the drinks but we are in Vegas mind you! Red Square is a high end place complete with a decent caviar menu and appetizers that will run you upwards of $20-30.
Kim and Brad arrived - Kim had her Starbucks and Brad had water. Mel and I nursed our drinks and finally started feeling tired so we thought we'd head home and call it an early night.
YEAH RIGHT! We left the bar with Kim and heard the live band playing and it was a great Journey song so I just wanted to check it out really quick. Mel and I stood there listening to the song and said our goodbyes to Kim and Brad who were headed back to Luxor. Melanie suggested checking out one more bar before we left and it was this place called "Eye Candy". OMG - what an awesome place. Totally ultra lounge hip feel and they had a DJ spinning until 3am. No cover and tons of seating! Mel and I had our pick of places to sit, even when it got crowded later on.As we had not changed, we were quite underdressed for here too but we didn't care. We were just there to check things out and not to impress anyone anyways. We sat and did quite a bit of people watching, including the three disgusting married men who tried to pick up on this obviously lesbian couple who were just pretty much scamming men for drinks. These older guys thought they had a chance with these little 21 year olds who were shaking and totally showing what mamma gave them up in the go go box. Ewwwwww! As Melanie put it, "we all know here really well now". It's Vegas so not surprising! We went out and danced a little bit, having to leave the stage at one point due to Melanie and I being unable to stop laughing at this guy dancing.
He kinda looked like he was riding a bicycle at the same speed, no matter what tempo the song was. And then he took his hair out of the ponytail and really tried to go buck wild! We wandered around a bit and had planned to venture on home around 1:15am or so and we were waiting a bit more to ensure I was a good driver even though I only had the one vodka which I nursed for hours.
Well, we were hanging out near the bar people watching when someone came up beside me and started chatting. Mind you, there is a Harley Davidson convention in town and there are bikers everywhere! Bald head and tattoo heaven for me...OMG! Turns out this guy, Chris, is here for the convention as his family just opened a dealership up in Idaho.
We ended up chatting for quite some time and he was a super sweet guy. I look over to Melanie to say something and realize she has a new friend too! Terry from England was chatting her up about the best Las Vegas clubs and all her world travels. Ironically, he lives in Europe but Melanie has seen way more of it than he has! We all stood there talking when we realized it was 3am since the lights were coming on. OMG..so much for getting home early!Chris had to get to his room and get some sleep as he had to be in seminars in less than 4 hours. HA HA. Mel and I chatted with Terry a bit longer at the bar and we headed out, stopping for some additional photos at Red Square since they were now closed and the walkways were pretty much deserted.
Of course, most of the night, Melanie had been saying she wanted frozen yogurt. How on earth could she be hungry after the amount of food we inhaled at Dona Marias!??!?! In any case, as we were walking to the car, she decides she wants Roberto's Mexican now instead! LOL.
We head out and of course make a pit stop for Robertos's chicken tacos and finally I get her dropped off and back to Lisa's house....4am. Of course, now I am wound up so no sleep for me until almost 5am when I was finally able to fall asleep! Good grief Melanie! LOL.

Anyways, some of the best memories of my childhood are fresh tamales at the holidays and Pozole which is not commonly found in many restaurants.
Doña Maria's is known for their tamales and you can order them individually or by the dozen for take out as well. They serve both the red (beef) and chicken (green) as well as the dessert (pineapple raisin) ones which I was never quite fond of as a child.
Pozole is similar to Menudo minus the tripe. It is a pork based soup or stew with hominy, chiles, garbanzo beans (traditionally), and other seasonings. Garnishes include cabbage or lettuce (cabbage is better), oregano, radish, cilantro, avocado, and lime juice. Most people will tell you the Pozole you get in chain restaurants is not as good which is why it is harder to find. This is the closest Pozole to what I grew up with and brings back very fond memories of childhood!
Most of the time I go here, I get the Pozole and a tamale or two. Their tacos are good - the avocado being one of my favorites. Their albondigas soup is excellent as well and Melanie tried the Menudo this trip and said it was good.
Doña Maria's has been in business since 1980 and has two Las Vegas locations - one downtown off Charleston and Las Vegas Blvd and the other is more Summerlin way off Tenaya. I've been to both and the original location downtown is much better. It's the authentic food and atmosphere whereas the Summerlin one is newer, more like a typical chain Mexican restaurant decor.
