Ladies Night (Blue Martini Lounge & Another Stop into NY NY Dueling Pianos)
So, the plan was to meet up at Blue Martini for ladies night. The last couple times we had been there it was PACKED! Mel and I got our wires crossed about who's driving, etc but we managed to make it there around 4:15pm. Kristy (Melissa's friend) was already there so her and I scoped out tables while Mel was parking. OMG, Kristy is the greatest and funniest person and has ZERO problem speaking her mind. As we were walking in and she saw my dress, she says very very loudly, "OMG your t*ts are F'in HUGE" and the hostess starts laughing along with several patrons at the outside bar! Uhhh, thanks Kristy! LOL.
We got inside and found a big table right by the bar and dance floor. It took awhile to start filling up so the only noticable people were the group of married men several tables over who kept staring.
Eventually, people started rolling in and there was a little better eye candy. I think because of the nasty weather today (monsoon seaon - it poured rain and lots of thunderstorms) people might've been inclined to hang at home. For awhile it was just Kristy, Mel, and I as Nancy backed out due to a migraine and Melissa wouldn't be there until 8pm. Next thing you know, Mr. Married from several tables over is between Kristy and Melanie. Whoa nelly! He wants to buy us shots. Hmmm, Grey Goose for Melanie and Kristy and I tried this purple something or other that was pretty sweet. He later told Kristy he was recently separated...uh huh, sure! LOL. But he was very nice, never said anything inappropriate, and I do completely appreciate him buying us all drinks - very nice gesture! And it wouldn't be a normal night out for me if something odd didn't happen.
Yeah....there was a guy walking around and I realized he looked very familiar.....hmm, where do I know this one from? Well, I realized he was a guy I met last October when I was out visiting. My friends and I had been in a PT's Pub in town and he ended up hanging with us for awhile, we bought drinks together, played pool, and had a great time. He happened to work for a big plaintiff attorney firm in town and I am obviously on the other side of that boundary in my hated defense world. I lost touch with him over the last year as he switched firms and I was never able to email him photos from when we all hung out. And poof, here is again...another random encounter almost another year later! Hopefully now we will become friends and make real attempts to run into each other, not just a fancy passing! LOL. I also saw a few more other attorneys I know - one who I used to party with on our Friday night get togethers and I had not seen him since I left my last insurance carrier in 2005. He's now switched firms and is running for Justice of the Peace this next election! Wow does time fly!Two guys came over and asked if we were using the other chairs and at first we said yes but felt bad since we knew our friends wouldn't be there for another two hours or so, so we invited them to sit with us. I am soooooooo glad they did - James and Mark were awesome people and I really enjoyed hanging out! Mark is married and we talked a lot about his wife and their lines of work and it was just a nice time.
Next, Desiree shows up and Melissa is hot on her heels. Desiree is the organizer for several meetup.com groups in the Las Vegas area and Melanie and I met her the last time we were at Blue Martini. We want to get together and discuss some networking opportunities as she is heavily involved in the travel industry and actually travels for companies like REI and such, handling some of their more adventure like tours. It seems like there is nothing or nowhere this chick hasn't been!I was set to meet up with my friend Kim (bundysmom) at NY NY and catch the rest of tonight's dueling piano show and might actualy score some seats sitting down! Whoo Hoo! Not much to report from NY NY - Mark from Blue Martini had met us over there and we all just hung out and chatted for a bit, watching the awesome show.
I am quickly figuring out most of these guys all know each other and rotate bars it seems like. One of the guys, Scott, who was playing tonight was at Harrahs on Sunday. I really liked Scott and Dennis perform together- great stage presence and just fun people to watch. Both of them are excellent singers and very engaging. We hung around there until Scott and Dennis' last set around 1:30am and headed out and home to beddy by! LOL. I had to take Melanie back to her car at the shopping center where Blue Martini is. On the way we discussed stopping at the "Welcome to Las Vegas" sign and taking photos! I never did that the entire time I lived in Vegas - how silly! As soon as we stopped, people started showing up and we couldn't get these people behind us to stop hogging the sign so we improvised as much as possible.
HA HA.We were back off and I dropped Melanie off and 10 minutes back to Lisa's house. WHEW! OMG, actually home before 4am tonight..I might actually get some REAL sleep!!! Nah, I will sit up and blog for awhile as usual! :-)
One difference between NY NY and the other shows I had seen thus far was the cover charge. If you arrive after 8pm, there is a $5 cover for standing room only, or $15 per person for seating. I am told that it goes up to $25 on the weekend for tables. My recommendation is if you plan to watch the whole show (8pm - 3am), pay the $15 for seating unless you know you will be up dancing the whole time. At first I was a little annoyed with the idea of paying for a seat when I am already ordering drinks but trust me - you will thank them for having the cover once you see how packed it can get! It really helped with crowd control and the overall enjoyment of the experience itself.
We were there on a Tuesday night and performing first were Dennis and James. Kevin and Shawn were next to go on. Unlike Harrahs where they rotated one player in at a time, these guys perform a set and then switch. They each play two sets, approximately 1 1/2 hours each.
Kim had warned me that Kevin was an absolute "maniac" on stage and he certainly did not disappoint. He is an incredible piano player and his stage personality is quite magnetic! All the performers that night were incredible and I was glued to the show until the 3am end time.
Don't be fooled, this is not your typical elevator music piano lounge which most people think of when they hear piano bar. If that is your preference, they certainly exist in Las Vegas but this is the place to be for a great time with your closest friends and perhaps the new ones you make during your stay! Classics like Billy Joel and Elton John, along with harder edge selections from AC/DC and Guns N' Roses fill the air and draw you in from the casino floor. For those still skeptical about the piano bar experience, NY NY has several vantage points where you can check things out without paying a cover if you choose. Enjoy a pizza from a sidewalk cafe and sway to the songs eminating from the pub. Or grab a drink from one of the two bars that surround the perimeter of the Bar at Times Square and rock out in the casino - trust me, you won't be the only one!
Kevin had mentioned it is basically a different show every night so I decided to bring a couple more friends and we stopped by the next night after our other plans just to check out the new performers. Ironically, Scott who I had just seen duel at Harrah's on Sunday was performing with Dennis from the night before. Unfortunately, we arrived late and I did not catch the other two performers names (will update when known).
Both nights were incredible and my friends who had not really been to a piano bar show really enjoyed themselves as well. No matter what type of music you like, they seem to hit them all - country and rap included! If you want to embarrass your friends for their birthday or whatever celebration you can think of, this is the place to do it. As the night goes on, the better it gets!
One helpful tip if you have any sensitivity to loud music - bring ear plugs. Yes, ear plugs! I was warned to bring them and forgot them anyways but Kevin had a couple spare pairs he gave us. It doesn't deter from the overall experience, trust me, but it does help! The venue is small and these guys rock so it's going to be loud. Their energy is fed by the audience so the crazier the audience, the louder it gets. And don't be fooled into thinking it's a young rowdy crowd - both nights I was there, everyone from 21 to over 70 were there having a great time. And no one says you have to be crazy to enjoy the show, you can quietly sit back in the corner and observe like many people do or you can be the one dancing drunk near the pianos to which your friends will kindly remind you the next day through Kodak moments!
If you are interested in seeing the whole show, they do take reservations ahead of time for the tables which I highly recommend. This allows you the freedom to just show up and know you will have a seat waiting for you. It does fill up and the second night I was there, the tables were all reserved so we had to wait for someone to leave before we were able to go in.
Also, if you are interested in specific peformers, you may be able to call and find out who's dueling that night. My best recommendations: Kevin Krohn and Dennis West.
Kevin Krohn - duels exclusively at NY NY Sun - Weds nights. He hails from sunny San Diego, California and has quite a musical background, including currently recording his own original songs! Check him out on his myspace: www.myspace.com/kevinonkeys. Make sure to stop and say hi after the show - he's one of the most down to earth and nicest people you will meet!
Dennis West - not sure of his exact days but he was dueling on both Tuesday and Wednesday nights when I was there. He hails from New Jersey and he might look familiar to some as he has performed in the Legends in Concert show as Jerry Lee Lewis! He also has quite the musical background and "rumored" to share a birthday with Elvis - surely a homage to his success! Coincidentally, Dennis does a great Elvis during the show that is not to be missed!
When in Vegas, definitely make a stop in to NY NY and check these guys out - you won't be disappointed!!!
