Tall Ships coming to town
June 27, 2008
It was the July long weekend......I had been waiting for these darn things to come in all year long. I thought the day was never going to get here.
The Tall Ships...hooray!!!
They began coming in Friday morning around 10:00am...of course I was at work so I could not get out to the ocean to get photos of them while the sails were up....darn. But I patiently waited for them to come through at the Inner Harbour where they were going to park for the weekend. Sails down though...
So I took an early lunch and starting clicking away as much as I could in 30 minutes.
Then ran back to work, out for coffee break at 1:45pm...a few more pictures...then left town at 3:00pm, for the second job.
So I took myself down to the Inner Harbour on Saturday, and to my surprise everything was blocked off so you could not even walk down to see unless you paid $5. 00 just to walk in, 15.00 for the day and $30.00 if you wanted to board a ship.
So Okay...I don't mind paying money to go on the ship..(If I wanted to), but I just wanted to go get a few photos and wander around...this was not to be. The weather was very hot, there were hundreds of people (I am not a big crowd person), line up's from here to China...so I opted for a few photos of what I could get. Shaun was kind enough to let me use what photos he took to...so I did my best. (Thanks shaun).
There were many great ships there.
There was The Eagle which is a masted Barque from The US coastguard which was originally a Nazi training ship. It is a coup because the vessel is a class A type, which means, it is one of the biggest tall ships.
A more Famous ship is the HMS Bounty. In 1960 MGM studios commissioned mastercraftsman in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia to build a replica of the Bounty for the film, Mutiny on the Bounty starring Marlon Brando. It took 7 months to build. The Bounty is owned by Robert Hansen, who is planning to follow the original Bounty's voyage to celebrate the 220 year anniversary since the Bounty first landed on Tahiti and will be sailing to Hawaii then Tahiti shortly after Visiting Port Alberni July 12-13 2008.
Hollywood hasn't forgotten about the Bounty either. She has continued to star in many films including Treasure Island, Yellowbeard and more recently completely re-outfitted to appear in Pirates of the caribbean II: Dead Mans Chest.
There were many other ships there too, such as a black pirate ship, the concordia, Pallada, Black Pilgrim...so many ships and not enough time to see them all.
All in all I enjoyed seeing them all as best as I could.
But I was willing just to gaze....but if you don't mind line-up's, lots of food and entertainment......then this was the place to be.
Thanks for sailing in..........
