Our shack in the Florida Bay Resort
The Perhentians: two little tropical islands where the rocks rise steeply out of the sea, covered in jungle. Here and there, a small strip of golden sand backed by the jungle and fronting onto the sea, which is the most beautiful turquiose you can imagine.

Pulau Perhentian Kecil is the smaller of the two islands. We stayed on the larger one, Pulau Perhentian Besar. Our initial excitetment on arrival was soon overcome with dismay when we tried to settle into what would be our accommodation for the next 7 nights, the Flora Bay Resort. Our shack was just that, a rickety wooden shack on the beach, with no AC, a creaky fold out bed and a hole in the bathroom wall where a window should be.  The bathroom itself was filthy and smelly. The air temperature in the shack must have been approaching boiling point.
As well as the heat, the uncomfortable creaky bed and the smell of urine from the 'bathroom', there was a security guard who sat right opposite watching TV all night. The fan in the shack next door made our wall vibrate loudly. Sleep was impossible. I gave up around 4am and sat on the porch for most of the night.

The next morning we went for a walk along the beach and found much better digs just a few hundred yards away. The rooms have a proper bathroom, proper beds, AC and even an electric shower. The resort has a pool and a recreation center where you can hire canoes and snorkelling equiptment and arrange scuba diving lessons, courses or dives.

Now, with a comfortable location to spend the night, the island feels like paradise.
