Not quite what we expected

Having spent time in Siem Reap, which was very touristy, and Phnom Penh, which was a big noisy dirty city, we felt we hadn't really seen much of proper Cambodia.  So, before leaving for Vietnam we decided to pick another town off the tourist trail and spend two nights there.  After a quick peek at a map and a lonely planet guide, we settled on Sihanoukville and duly caught the next bus out of Phnom Penh, a little daunted at the fact that we were wandering off into the wilds of Cambodia where presumably most people wouldn't speak English and it might even be a little dodgy.

Nothing could be further from the truth.  As it turns out, the town is mostly a collection of white owned businesses, mainly bars and hotels.  It had an almost hippy feel about it - it seems a lot of drifters passing through here decided to stay and open their own business. The bars and smaller guesthouses are staffed mainly by English and Australian ex-pats.

Our original sentiments of dissapointment must have been overcome at some stage, because instead of staying the two nights as planned, we ended up staying five.  And I'm not quite sure why because there is very little to do apart from lie beside the pool and chill out, play pool or ping pong and scoot around town on a hired moped.

Funny, everyone seems to have a certain image of Sihanoukville, but it never is what anyone expects! For me, I thought it would be much nicer but I found it to be dirty and a little shady. I didn't mind so much though but some others in my group were really disappointed!
