Last summer I went surfing in the North of Spain. Zaroutz is a small town pretty close to San Sebastian and Bilbao. Though I'm a poor surfer, it was a wonderful trip.

Breaking waves

I had never surfed before, but some of my friends convinced my to try it... So I signed up for a summer camp in Zarautz.

Surfing is really hard, you need to be in good condition. I liked being in the water, but there were so many other people, that you had to be more busy with gaining a spot than with surfing itself. I have to admit that I pretty much gave up after a couple of days. I was so sick of avoiding those sharp surfboards and loosing each wave to some local talent... But anyway, it was a great trip! We had a  cool group of people together for spicing up parties and making fun. The organization (Boardx, powered by O'Neil) was superb! They really did a great job of creating events and surf classes.

Zarautz is only a small town, and after one day you have seen pretty much all of it.

Though they have this one ice cream bar with an endless list of tastes... I went there several times to try out as many as I could, but it was impossible to test them all.

Our camping was on top of a mountain, near the beach. Each day we had to walk thirty minutes downhill, and each evening after surfing we climbed back up there. Although this might sound unpractical, it was all worth it. It was just wonderful to wake up in the morning, after a heavy night, stick your head out of the tent and watch this magical view over the Atlantic.

One of the last days, we went to San Sebastian for some tapas. We didn't do any museums or historical stuff, simply because in those two weeks, we were surfers! So we shopped some Roxy clothes and explored the beach and avenues.
In San Sebastian there is a statue that reminded me of the one in Rio. It represents Jesus who guards over the city and it stands on top of a hill. Of course, we had to climb it to enjoy another panorama. By the way, those tapas where the best I have ever had, and I have visited Spain more than ones... The bar was truly authentic and the dishes where so fresh and original. Not the kind of tapas you can find anywhere in 'Spanish restaurants' around the world. Unfortunately, I can't recall the name of this bar. But don't worry, there must be hundreds of places like it in San Sebastian. Just don't pick one on the main road or close to the beaches. Walk around a bit into the smaller streets to find a really good spot!

Later we went back to San Sebastian for having a party in the Bataplan, this is a disco at the beach. Marvellous party, due to our great entourage! Nothing better than sitting in the cold sand, listening to the waves while the music fades, waiting for the first train to catch!

You know there is a surfer in the ASP World tour that is from Zarautz, Aritz Aranburu. Did you happen to see him while you were there? It sounds like you had a great trip. I hope to have one just like it one day :P I'm going to Hawaii in Dec. to watch Pipeline Masters so I will write as much of that down as I can. Although I'm not much on writing :P Happy Travels!!!

Cool! I went surfing in Biarritz/Anglet, really close to San Sebastian. It was a lot of fun - but less crowded because it was the middle of winter and freezing :) You will have to try surfing again in a less crowded place!
