On Red Square and Manezhnaya Square
July 10, 2008
The first time I came to Moscow, it was the day of Medvedev's inauguration, so everything Kremlin-related was shut. I was, thus, only able to see the Kremlin from a distance and where I was positioned, I wasn't able to see St. Basil's Cathedral. So essentially, this commemorates my first trip to Red/Manezhnaya Squares. It's just absolutely incredible.
I went just after everything had closed for the night, so it wasn't too crowded. Mostly people were milling about on the squares or having a rest to eat their ice cream/drink their квас on the public garden area. There were quite a number of Russian tourists, as well, snapping pix and the like. I watched the changing of the guard briefly, which unlike in the US, also involved a wardrobe check. The guard leaving repositioned the hat of the guy staying. I'm not at all sure what that's about, but I found it amusing. I also like the fact that the Alexandrovsky Sad more or less opens up onto the Kremlin grounds. That's a nice convenience for those of me who are lazy.
Hopefully I can go back soon to check out the insides. I also want to see the main souvenir shop to see what kind of silliness they offer and for how much. I would guess that I can find most of it on Stariy Arbat to begin with. But maybe not.
