Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina by Train, Bus, and Car. The idea is to swim in the Black Sea, Ohrid Sea, and the Adriatic Sea all in one trip. You have to have a goal after all...

Burgas

Burgas train station, much nicer now that it's not raining and we're not dealing with the grumpy people inside now!
At first we were skeptical about Burgas... based on a quick search of Google Earth and the internet, it appeared to be a nasty port city in a huge industrial zone. Some of the Google aerial photos were even taken during the winter and showed a bleak, windswept ice-scape.... it didn't sound too inviting. But it was where the train to Kraimorie stopped.

It turned out that they've used the profits from the port operations and tourism to transform this former grimy industrial city of communist times into a pretty nice destination. The streets downtown are clean and wide, historical buildings are restored, and they have nice parks and cafe-lined pedestrian streets with art exhibits. Not quite what we'd envisioned... It's not all touristy and expensive, but it's a place you'd want to spend the afternoon. And then head to Kraimorie.

Beds near the beach
A nice 3 story house about 5 minutes from the beach. It's actually in Kraimorie, a tiny seaside village, about 20 minutes from Burgas, out in the countryside.

Very plain, just beds and a table in the bedrooms (apartments are fancier, I believe), but clean and quiet. You'll want to be at the beach all day anyway so you just need a bed. The mother that runs the place is great, but speaks only Bulgarian although it wasn't a problem at all. Her son worked out some details when he came home from work and is available by phone during the day, if there's a communication problem. Kraimorie is a quite little seaside village that serves mostly Bulgarian tourists, as it's off the main tourist routes. We didn't come across any other foreigners there. There's a nice beach, a couple bar/restaurants, grocery stores, and an easy walk to a nice nature reserve about a kilometer away. Lots of jellyfish, but they don't sting.

In Burgas catch the local bus from the Post Office, about a block from the train station (not the bus station) to Kraimorie for about half a Euro. Avoid the taxis that charge about 10x as much for the 20 minute ride. Like everything in Bulgaria the signs are in Cyrillic script, so learn what Kraimorie looks like in Bulgarian first. It's at the end of the line, so you don't have to worry about finding the stop. Hourly busses between Kraimorie and Burgas, but don't miss the last one which leaves around 7pm I believe.

That's why I liked these jellyfish, they looked stingy, but ...weren't. Makes you look manly jumping into half water - half jelly and "resisting" the stings...

Jellyfish that don't sting? I've been nailed by a lot of those critters, some worse than others, but there was always a sting!
