Some monkeys baboons in their outside playarea in the old monkeyhouse.
Finally we had summer vacation and since we were not going anywhere, we wanted to do at least something somewhat special for my daughter's b-day, so we decided to go to the Zoo in Frankfurt. The Zoo was build in the 1858 an is celebrating it's 150 years existence. For this they have a very informative exhibition of the zoo's history displayed in the birdhouse.
Since we have learned a lot about animals since then, many of the animals were outquarted into other zoo's or simply certain breeds will not be in seen in the Frankfurt Zoo since the area of 11ha is just too small. So, sorry, no elephants.
There have been many changes in the zoo lately and we decided to see how the newest project, the new ape house will look like. Well, I was more than impressed.
I think he is really enjoying the sunshine - it is sooo hot today
The building reminded me a lot of the Palmengarten, but it still has apes also - and it is not even close to being done. Of course there were many other animals as well, the zoo carries over 4500 animals, 500 different kinds.
We decided to do the outside area first - just in case it might rain - and sure enough, when we got close to the main entrance with the theater - it started raining. So, we went along to look at the tigers and the other cats. When we got done we walked over to the Exotarium and had a seat on a bench for some ice-cream and it started pouring. Luckily we were sitting under bushes and trees and I was sooo thankful for the breeze. It had to horribly muggy all day, so the rain felt like a relieve. But, it did not stop. We finally started getting wet. Very wet. So, we rain into the exotarium to visit the fish. And the turtles, snakes, and insects. Luckily, my camera was out of batteries as usual. I know, I would have felt obligated to take pictures of some of the interesting animals, but I can do well without the insects.  Because of the rain, we missed the feeding time, but decided to feed ourselves in the Sombrero (see review) and wait out the rain, then we went and looked at some birds, before we were finally getting ready to go home.
