My friend Mike (Canadian) invited me over to visit him at one of Arizona's largest RV parks located in Quartzsite: Quartzsite is located 20 miles east of the Colorado River on I-10 in southwestern Arizona. Quartzsite is a giant rock hound's paradise that attracts many tourists and snow birds every year since the 1960s. These days, it is also the dwelling of over a million visitors each year, most of whom converge on this small town in a wave of RVs during the months of January and February.
I arrived just in time to witness the set-up of the largest stalls of over 2,000 vendors of rocks, gems, minerals, fossils and everything else you can think of. Quartzsite right now is hosting one of the world's largest open air flea markets, it is a site to see.
As I walked around from the parking lot to the stalls, I noticed that there were visitors from out of state and out of country, so I took pictures of the licence plates in the parking lot. It was actually fun doing this because people kept stopping by and asking why I was interested in car plates instead of the gem stones. A couple from British Columbia in Canada stopped by to tell us about their travels and Mike found out they were actually from the same city and may have played together as children. The look on their faces when I explained why I was taking pictures changed at the speed of light from suspicion to a gentle smile.
