Tucson Gem, Mineral & Fossil show

I have been to the world's largest gem, mineral and fossil treasure hunt; If you're not familiar with this adventure, you should be! What is incredible about this is that it all happens in my home state.  This is the biggest, gem, mineral, & fossil show on the planet and it takes place right here in Tucson, Arizona. It is that time of year when Tucson is graced by the presence of many from all walks of life. Every winter between January 30 to February 14 (for two weeks straight), Tucson is made an international Market place for Minerals, gems and Fossils from different parts of the world. This market place is popularly referred to as the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show. With thousands of participants including buyers and sellers and more than forty sites around town, this is the single largest event of the year in Tucson.

Many of the shows occur in the hotels, resorts and giant tents set outside of the exhibition area down town Tucson Convention centre.

If you are a collector of lover of rare stones, gems and fossils, there is something for you at this show; definitely a place to be if you can afford it. From granite, silver, glass and stone beads, diamonds, opals, quartz, dinosaur eggs, emeralds, crystals to pieces from heavenly bodies like asteroids.  The mineral show is made up of vendors selling the most incredible objects pulled from the earth and displayed all together under one roof. The most brilliant colours, shapes, and textures imaginable.

The show is incredibly big giving many hotels business they could only dream of: many hotels are stocked full with vendors from different parts of the world, and there are a myriad of locations throughout the city.

You can find just as fascinating things for cheaper prices at the satellite shows around the city, but what is considered affordable (cheap) in the mineral world is relative. My Argentine friend Hans gave me a piece of Meteorite to put on my key chain for 'good luck and love' he said. The Tucson show is actually a continuation of what begins in Quartzsite, many vendors from the Quartzsite flea market come down to the Tucson meet. Words are not enough to describe what is present at this show, I have been privileged to attend two shows; one in Quartzite and another here in Tucson which is my current resident city.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” Mark Twain.
