Historical Bisbee Cooper Mine

This was a stop on our way home from Douglas, Arizona. We did not really go on a guided tour like they offer at the Mine Tours office. We rather make a stop by the overlook right next to the World War II Memorial and had a spectacular view of the now defunct mine. I was taken aback by the sheer size of the mine,a nd what it must have been like for the miners to dig through such large and deep areas to get cooper. It was a beautiful sunny day with temperatures in the upper 60s. The brisk wind make the day feel fresh and warm just like a spring day should be. Traffic was minimal and the many visitors that stopped by to see the mine were pleasant and as surprised as I was.

It is funny that ater living in Arizona for over 10 years, I had never stopped at this point even though I have been to Bisbee numerous times.

Historical Bisbee Cooper Mine
I was glad I stopped, my sister was shocked to learn that I had not been there seeing as I tend to want to cover all areas around where I reside. I should say, if you find yourself in Bisbee, there is a guided tour of the mine and from what I gathered, it is money well spent. For the geology or archeology lover, this is an adventure into learning about what you love most.

I have however been to the Bisbee Mining Museum whish is affiliated with the Sithsonian Institution. It has an outstanding display of the Bisbee  historical mining industry and chronicles its history from inception to when it closed down. When I visited last, the admission fee was $7, it may have gone up just like every thing has. Check out the Cooper Queen Mining website or call them for more information. For guided tour of the mine, one needs a reservation.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” Mark Twain.
