I found that this monument is underrated in Arizona. Located in Flagstaff, AZ, it is an amazing field of lava from a volcanic eruption. We did not hike up t Lenox which was recommended by the guide at the visitor center. We drove up the road to the trail head, but decided against hiking. We really did not have time to do it anyway, we were trying to get back home after 4 days in Utah!

The Visitor center is a great stop, so do stop by for information on the entire area. It is amazing to find places like Sunset crater still preserved the way it is. The last volcanic eruption in this area was 1000 years ago, evidence of this is in the ash and black rock. But I was also surprised at the plant life in the area, a lot of green everywhere you turn. Of course 1000 years is a long time, so life has found a way to overcome the less than stellar conditions. We walked the paved loop trail but not all the way.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” Mark Twain.
