This awesome waterfall soaked me to the skin. And killed my camera.
Ah, Dettifoss. Destroyer of cameras, drowner of packed lunches, and the first place to make me feel like someone had tipped a bath of freezing cold water over my head. While Goðafoss is beauty, Dettifoss is power. Hundreds of tons of water cascade over the lip of the falls, crashing down drenching everything that dares get too close. You can hear the noise of the falls in the car park (several hundred metres away), and this increases as you approach to a crescendo, a roar that drowns you in sound as the fall drowns you in water. The mist from the falls rises high into the sky, and the playful, thoroughly evil wind blows it over you with impunity wherever you choose to stand.

I have never been as wet in my life (and this includes showers and baths) as I have here. The decision by the heavens to bucket it down moments later didn't help. Whilst the power of the falls is awe inspiring, after you've heard the noise and marveled at the power Dettifoss looses some appeal (possibly as you are soaking). The area isn't a pretty or stunning as Goðafoss, and getting wet seems to be the whole point. The lack of facilities wasn't helpful either - one small portaloo and no shelter.

It's well worth seeing Dettifoss, but I suggest at least bring a brolly and several layers of waterproofs. Better yet a hazmat suit or submarine.

Thanks! No I didn't, mainly sliding in the wet here! Was amazing though.
