Back to the UK

1999...I flew back to Heathrow, but by myself this time.

A week in London

After my first year of college, a high school friend of mine invited me to London where she was finishing up a semester abroad.  I remember my first impressions of the city being that of having a lot of character.  I also never felt overwhelmed or unsafe with just walking around the streets (during the day of course) by myself while my friend was in classes.  Of course, then again, maybe I was just naive at the time.  I also remember kids playing out at recess on the roofs of their school buildings, hearing the screams from a soccer game going on above as I walked down some of the streets.  Or the smells of roasting peanuts on some of the busier streets, which I hear smell better than they taste (I was unable to experience that with my peanut allergy).

While I was roaming around London, I did the usual touris things.  Snapped some photos of Big Ben and the Parliament Building, toured the Tower of London & Westminster Abbey, and stood on the London Bridge while viewing the Tower Bridge as the River Thames flowed beneath me.

I distinctly remember visiting St. Paul's Catherdral.  Even though I was on my own agenda this time in the UK, this was one of my favorite sites in London.  After taking communion there (yes, my previous church trip must have rubbed off on me a bit), I traveled up to the Whispering Gallery where you can hear the whistpers of another person standing on the other side of the dome, which is 42 meters away...very cool!  Finally, there is a great view of the city from the Golden Gallery at the top of the Cathedral.

Most of the rest of my week in London was spent just bumming around by myself, taking in the sites of the city.  I did get to go out and experience some of London's pubs a couple of times and walk through Notting Hill, which was cool since that was when the movie was also out in theatres...lol.

Next stop....Spain.
