Groot Constantia with Hannes
June 11, 2008
This was a great day when I met up with Hannes at the Groot Constatia winery. We also had lunch at a great retsuarant on the estate called Jonkershuis. We tasted quite a few wines and had a chance to buy a couple to bring back to the USA. We talked a lot about politics and the ills of the world. It was a great afternoon to just kick back and enjoy.
Great tastings
This place is just great. It is right in town very close to the Tokai area. When you enter the estate, you know you are in for a treat. The wine tasting was very reasonable. You pay for a pass that offers you 5 free tastings. You choose from an extensive list of varietials. The staff was very knowledgable about the region, the wines and proccess. The pourer gave us many more than the five allowed wines including 'Gouverneurs Reserve'. This was a great smooth wine, very drinkable today, but what a differnce a few years will make.
There are large oversized leather couches for relaxing in while sipping your wine, and extensive souvenir shop and, of course, plenty of bottles of wine for sale. We bought the "Pinotage" which was my first experience of this variety. I enjoyed it and brought it home to America.
The tasting includes a souvenir wine glass. I would recommend everyone take a moment to visit here.

Great Curry
This was a great little restaurant that sits on the core of the Groot Constantia Wine Estate. There are oak trees one side and the vinyard on the other. The spectacular views of False Bay make this well worth the experience. The menu is very inviting with various meats and local dishes include Cape Malay Curries. I had the lamb, and it was out of this world. the serve each meal with two kinds of breads and fresh butter. We give praises to the patience of the wait staff who took our photo. Actually, photos because I wanted the light to be right, the angle to be right, well, you get the idea. The wine list was varied and complimented the menu. Very pleasant place to have a good meal and a great conversation.
Hannes and I enjoying a great Ca...
