An Interview with the Futureheads

Fangirl with the Futureheads
We had the morning free so Jade and I hit the Chatuchak Market for some shopping. As anyone who's been to Thailand knows, the Thais are a lovely bunch of skinny, happy, smiley, friendly people. If only their English were a wee bit more polished. It really was getting frustrating for both Jade and I, especially whenever we'd hop into a cab. Their language is tonal, and they use the same fords for say "yes" and "no" and the only way to distinguish their meaning is through their intonation. So when the person you're talking to replies in a flat tone, you're doomed. We've been somewhat victimized by a number of cabbies whenever we asked them if they're familiar with our hotel. They usually just nod, give a one word answer and let us in, leading us to believe that they do, when in fact, we end up stopping by the first person we see on the road for the driver to ask for directions.

Several times too, did we end up going in the wrong direction and thus ended up paying more cab fare than we should've.

At least this time was different since Chatuchak's a rather famous market and all the locals knew how to get there. I didn't really intend on doing much shopping, but I enjoyed going around the little stalls that sold everything from beaded jewelry to vintage watches, from home accessories to chickens. After checking out the place I ended up buying a few items for some people back home and realized my phone's battery was about to die. Unbelievable, how could I have forgotten to charge my phone? Good thing it was still pretty early and I had time to go back to the hotel. Besides, I had one last interview with the Futureheads at 3 so I would just have to meet Jade and the rest at the festival later on tonight.

The interview was at the Eastin Lakeside Hotel, which happened to be in the same complex as the festival's venue. At least this time I wouldn't have to worry about being late and missing an act. Note and the other girl were there too, but this time I was no longer surprised. I hung out with them while waiting for my turn and reharshed memories of Glastonbury.

Since I literally was given the last slot, I was also the last one to interview the Futureheads - the babies of the bunch. Aged between 21-24, Barry, Ross, Jaff and Dave were absolutely adorable. It was like kicking back with your kid brother’s friends on a lazy afternoon and just having a great laugh. But I had to remind myself that these were true rock stars I’m dealing with here.

They may be young, but they’ve learned the ropes very early on in their career " gigging, signing and recording. They’re well on their way to releasing Means and Tributes, their second album, in May which was recorded in an instant 5 weeks. As quick as it was, nothing, they say, was compromised and the Sunderland boys are rather pleased with their sophomore effort. As usual, I capped off the interview with a token photo and a few signatures and went outside to meet Note & company again, as I would be going with them to the festival.

We got there pretty early which gave me another chance to go around and scout the area. The marketplace wasn't as interesting, though there were some exhibits of the participating bands as well as other minor attractions. Jade and the gang arrived on time and we all went in to enjoy the second and final night of the festival.

With regards to the Bangkok 100 Rock Festival itself, I just found the article I wrote about it and will re-post it here as a review.
