A trip to Guatemala and Belize
somewhat of a legend
There are three accommodations of varying prices available within Tikal itself. We were seriously considering staying there so we could be in the park early and see the sunrise but not-so-positive reviews and high prices made us decide to stay outside of the park. We had a choice of staying in the town of Flores, about 1,5 to 2 hours away from the park on a good road, or in the village of El Remate, about half way to Flores. Because it was closer, we decided on El Remate, and the famous Casa de Don David.
We booked via internet (their excellent website is packed with information), and had good, prompt reactions from them.
Well, we call heartily recommend staying at this place. It lies at the shore of the huge lake Peten Itza and has beautiful grounds (see the pictures). Rooms, in varying sizes, range from US$ 18 to 26 per person. The price includes one meal, your choice of lunch or dinner. Our room (one of the best) was large, clean and as new. Service was friendly, for example they arranged our bus transport to Belize without any problem, quick and easy. They can also arrange excursions for you.
Nice, locally made wood carvings are available in the lobby.

The restaurant served good home-style meals. Don't miss the stacks of literature with info on the area! Ask for the handy lunch box if you are going to spend the entire day in Tikal.
