The day started with me taking the bus down to Venice beach. I met up with Steph, an Australian personal trainer who is currently travelling the world. Our mission: rent a bike and cycle from Venice to Malibu. Both of us had to be back by late afternoon, which left us with a total of about 4 hours. “Ha, Easy! We’re gonna make it to Malibu anyway!” With a Columbus-like arrogance we set sails, erm, pedals and headed North.
Not only did Steph turn out to be a really lovely person but she is also a very good conversationalist, so our chat evolved around nutrition, training, relationships, couchsurfing, fake boobs and god.
A lot of pedalling later we began to realise that Malibu was nothing but a sweet illusion, a mirage to be sought after but never to be reached. Just like Columbus failed to set his foot on Indian soil, we would never ever see David Hasslehoff and Pamela Anderson do their daytime job, rescuing drowning children and Playboy models. However, unlike Columbus, who took comfort in his illusion of mistaking America for India, we painfully admitted to ourselves that we only made it to Santa Monica. Lucky world! Without this reckognition, now we all would have to call people from Santa Monica “Malibulians” and people from Malibu “Native Malibulians”.
Eventually we turned our rides around, raced back to Venice beach (causing several near misses) returned the bicycles and said good-bye.
Now the very first night with The LA CORE CREW lay ahead of me. Excitement!
After a quick shower - no warm water available this time (probably Charlie’s revenge for flushing him down the toilet) - I put on my nice pair of jeans and a white shirt that hadn’t suffered too much from being squashed in a suitcase for three days, veiled myself with a few sprays of my favourite perfume and sprinted outside where Alice picked me up.
When all of a sudden you see celebrities in real life that you only knew from the movies and your wet dreams, it’s like “Cool!” When Alice and me approached our meet-up spot the Versailles, a Cuban restaurant, the other flamboyant TravBuddy celebrities that I only knew from the internet and my… erm, whatever, were sitting on a little bench in front of the restaurant.
“How are you?” (hug)
etc. ad lib.
I felt immediately comfortable and excited.
The Cuban food was good, not great, but of course the company was excellent. Cute little dogs that meet each other and take an instant liking, do quite a bit of careful sniffing. That’s exactly what we did. Metaphorically speaking of course. Job? Last day? Family? Friends? Fun? Hobbies? All of this spiced up with a lot of tongue-in-cheek and hilariousness. Glorious times!
This of course, was just the beginning - the beginning of the evening and the beginning of a wonderful friendship. We were slowly warming up for a hot night in The Highlands in Hollywood.
We arrived early.
The beats sent their vibrations through the warm and humid air, some people were dancing, drinking, flirting and escaping from one reality into another.
A bit later Sheila arrived and added some more fuel to our fire. Tracy and I entered one pose-down competition after another (I always lost because Tracy actually KNOWS how to dance), we group-danced, pair-danced, messed-around, took way too many pictures and I tried very hard not to look at the go-go dancers in the boots with the fuuurrrrrrrrr. That would have been blatant defeat. The rest is censored.
After this night I knew one thing for sure - I had met an amazing group of people.
