Sunny day at Braamspunt; dolphin spotting and sightseeing

Together with some Dutch girls we (my brother and I) went on a boattrip to Braamspunt. We took a cab to a place just outside and north of Paramaribo and went on to the boat that was stationed there. Naturally there had to be a small discussion about the price. The girls had heard that the price included more than just Braamspunt. They also expected to go to some plantations, but that didn't happen for that price. As we didn't want to pay more, we agreed with the boatsman that he would also bring us to Nieuw Amsterdam which was on the way.
The trip is popular with us dutch people because you get to see dolphins swimming near the boat.
At Braamspunt you get to see the Atlantic Ocean and go for a swim or if we would have brought are fishing gear, we could go fishing. There are a few houses, a bar, fishermen and shrimp on the ground to dry. On a certain moment my brother went a bit further and he started calling my name and shouting to come over... So I hurried over to see a dead sea turtle (they are big!), so hurrying wasn't really necessary. We also wanted to go to Matapica to see those turtles laying eggs in the night, but the season was almost over, so we didn't want to take the chance.
On the way back we stopped at Nieuw Amsterdam. I had been there before, but it was nice to see it again. At Nieuw Amsterdam there are the remainings of a fort, a prison (used till mid 20th century), canons from WOI or II and other sightseeingstuff of the 18th century and later. There are also some small Javanese restaurants where we had some eggrolls, baked banana's and drinks. The boatsmen had told us that the house of Bouterse was near or leaving/arrival point and he was nice enough to take a little detour and show us the house. You might think, "why? Why do u want to see that." I must say, you don't, but he is well-known in Surinam and the Netherlands for his political actions in the eighties (Decembermoorden) and now and later for his 'possible' involvement in drugs(smuggle). So it was just a little bit of curiosity in what house he lives. And he lives nice....Big property, so it was difficult to see his house.
The trip was an overall success, but because of the sun in combination with the wind on the boat I got a sunbrun on my nose, but it was worth it;-).
