Camping in a rainforest

Heading into the rainforest.

This place is magnificent.  There is so much vegitation that the ground is covered in ferns... and vines, ferns and moss hang from every limb of every tree.  I've never been in a place so green.  The Parks and Recreation Department have really kept this place pristine and the hikes were really enjoyable.  A few nights a week the park rangers invite campers to join them around a fire nearby and they show photos of the area and teach about the wild life and how not to be eaten by mountain lions or black bears.  The only down-side to going there was that the mosquitoes aren't like mosquitoes at home.  They're ruthless and they don't care if you're wearing bug spray.  In fact I think they liked defying us.

The drive from the ticket booth to the campsites seemed to take a very, very long time.

Heading into the rainforest.
I think it was only about 15 minutes, but the winding roads made it seem longer.  It was also about 7 miles to the Hard Rain Cafe... and I'm not sure really why they call it a cafe.  It's much more like an old outpost that doesn't get shipments save for once a month.  I don't know if you could even call it a convenience store, but it was on the side of the road and sold things... some of it was edible.  I don't recommend it unless you're desperate and like paying double for things you could get for 80% less at Target or someplace similar.  The cocoa was gross and the coffee wasn't really that appealing.  Everything was much overpriced and I don't think we made a purchase save for the beverages that we ended up dumping out in the gravel.  It made for interesting times though, and we got to sit and hang out with a Bigfoot.  Always enjoyable conversation, especially with the ones that have blue chest hair.  We stopped there twice because Rachael needed something the second time... I don't remember what.  It was raining heavily both times, which seems to happen in a rainforest :) and it was really enjoyable to sit on the covered porch at the rickety park bench and watch the rain fall.

If you get the chance, visit this place.

Rachael took most if not all of these pictures because at the time I was lacking a camera.
