The Place of No Return
June 30, 2007
A couple pictures from Ouidah and the area near it. Ouidah is home a large memorial dedicated to remembering the slave trade in west Africa. It's called the place of no return, because likely none of the slaves would ever come back, or see their homes ever again. Not a very comfortable place to be a white person, but certainly still a worthwhile place to visit. The road down to the memorial is the same that the slaves used to march down just before they entered the boats to leave the continent.
Again, it's not much as far as tourist amenities go. Just a couple local vendors selling souvenirs. We did, however, happen to see the King of Ouidah during our visit to the memorial. It's certainly not everyday that one sees a king.
