A view of Szczecin

A visit to the city of "blue and green."

It's been about a month since I've gone anywhere or done much of anything other than work.  Summer has arrived, the weather is warm and sunny and I think a few days away will be good.  I've made a hotel reservation, bought a train ticket and this Friday off I go.

Szczecin is an important port and has shipyards close to the border with Germany.  Although it's medieval old town was seriously damaged during the Second World War, there still are numerous monuments and buildings from the time when Szczecin was a  part of Prussia.

I've read that it was considered the "Paris of the North."  This is because the urban layout is similar - both were designed by Baron G.E. Haussmann who did the urban planning for 19th century Paris.  Too bad it was destroyed...  But I've found that reconstruction work in Poland is very good and that aside from historical monuments, the food, people and nature are fantastic to discover.

It will be nice to see Szczecin at night!
So, I look forward to exploring some of the forests that surround the city, seeing its shipyard and having a beer or two at some of its bars!

I recently attended some conferences here in Warsaw about investing in various areas in Poland and there was a presentation about Szczecin in which they highlighted that the city has exuberant vegetation, rivers and lakes which make up about 50% of the city's territory.  Hence "the city of blue and green."

I've never been there, but will see if it's as nice as the pictures I'm seeing.
