Parade der Kulturen
June 21, 2008
On Staruday, the 21.06.2008 Frankfurt held the Parade of the Cultures for the 6th time. As every year clubs of Frankfurt get together to organize a parade through Frankfurt as a sign that the Neo-Nazis are not wanted here. They consider the parade a sign to show to whom Frankfurt really belongs - a city that understand itself as a city of all nations.
Unfortunately, I still have my old not-so-good camera, but lots of motivation. I missed the very beginning of the parade, because my mom thought we had so much time and she wanted to eat first, in case it gets to be too crowded later.
So we had some Eritrean stuff. It was a sampler dish with some lentils, spinach, white cabbage and beef with tomatoes. All of it very good. And very spicy. It was served on a pancake looking kind of bread. But, what a surprise - the pancake was very, very sour tasting, like it had a whole lot of yeast in it. The lady sitting next to me insisted it is to eating with finger, but considering I came by train and metro's and I am thinking about what all i had touched already, I decided to stick to a fork, which they did supply when you asked.
So, we finish our meal and walk to the parade. Ahhh and I see, same procedure as last year. Unfortunately where the parade ends for the Jury it is a very big hold up, therefore the parade comes to a stillstand all the way up the road. It is simply not moving. The participants are getting bored and restless - understandably.
But, it also makes it so hard to take any decent pictures. I have tried and will share with the few photos I managed to get. Besides a red nose and chest. The sun was out. It was nice.
After the parade there was also a small stage where we watched a russian dance group, very nice of what we did see, but if you were not one of the taller people, it was hard to see anything at all. I got a better look of the flamenco dancers, because the crowd had cleared a little bit, but not for long. After the Flamenco dancing we went to the other side of the "Main" to relax and get ouf of the crowd.
Then we went on to Sachsenhausen (old town) to the Struwwelpeter for dinner, before we finally went to an "Eiscafé" and the home.
I still have not learned to take pictures of food, but I will try to get better at it.

typical Äppelwein Pub
The Struwwelpeter is a typical Frankfurt Äpplewoi Stubb - a restaurant in pub style. There is nothing fancy about it. No frills, just good food at a very reasonable price. I enjoy the ambiente of the beer benches even on the inside. The place does need a make-over, it looks like no work has been done on it for years. But, the cook is still as good as ever.
It has a so called garden, which has nothing of a garden, but you can sit outside and be away from the noise of the cars. The bathrooms are clean, but smelly as most of the old toilets in that area smell.
The Struwwelpeter is open for lunch - and has a daily menue (except Saturday/Sunday) for around €5,00 UNTIL 17:00 (5pm) which is very, very hard to find in Frankfurt. It serves typical Frankfurt cuisine such as Rippchen and Kraut (smoked, boiled pork chops with sourkraut) sausages (liver, blood, and - or course - Frankfurters) and all kinds of other goodies. We had Schäufelche (pork shoulder) and it is served ONLY with a piece of bread - because it is so much meat - we did not even finish the bread. I do not recommend this for lovers of French Cuisine - It is good hearty homestyle cooking.
I recommend it a little above average, because the price is way under average!!
