In Australia I was a little nervous at first about going to England so I paid an agency 400 dollars to find me work. Before I got to England.
I arrived at Heathrow airport, my Dad said his old friend would pick me up from there. And I could spend the first few nights at his place before I move to Coventry. Coventry is where the agency had arranged some work. Well this agency was dodgy to say the least, and contacting them was difficult at times.
So any way it turned out my Dads friend was a Taxi driver back in the day. After passport check I walked out into the arrivals. I had no Idea what this guy looked like. I was walking past all those guys in suits holding up name placards, Smith Family, Jones, Tyler. You get the picture. I never really took much notice of these people, then a guy holding a placard with the name Gamble on it appeared. Hmm someone has the same last name as me. But the guy holding the sign was Jamaican, my dads friend was not. But I stopped and paused for a moment, maybe, just maybe. So I went over and said hey I’m Gamble. Gamble from Australia he replied. Yes I said. I didn’t get too excited just yet as it was a plane from Australia it could be anyone. Friend or Tony he said. Yep, that placard was for me. I always wanted to arrive this way, it was like been in the movies.
Any way we got to the car park, there was a black cab, and a Limo, I always wanted to ride in one of those black cabs, when I think of London, Black cabs are one of the first things that come to mind. But to my surprise he put the bags in the Limo….I thought it was a joke at first…Then he opened the door and said please Mr Gamble. Bloody hell I thought. I felt like James Bond or something. This is not how I had imagined backpacking at all. The whole trip to my friends flat I just had a big cheesy grin on my face. I was also thinking, bugger I hope I don’t have to pay.
So I spent a few day in London sight seeing, thanked my friend for his hospitality and went to the bus station to book my, ticket to Coventry.
It was there the next twist happened. I got a phone call, from another of my dads friends, who heard I had arrived in England. Come to Devon he said its far better than Coventry and its near the sea. Maybe I thought I call you back later. Coventry or Devon. I had no money and needed work, but the sea. I couldn’t pass up living by the sea side. So a ticket to Devon I asked for.
When I arrived in Ilfracombe I was just amazed, it was one of the most picturesque towns I had ever seen. I spent a few weeks living with Mick my dads friend, then I found a job. Which had some on site accommodation. Finding a job was so easy, I just filled out applications forms. The phone was quiet for a few days. Then I got so many job offers. But I think I made the right choice. I took the job on Woolacombe Bay Holiday Parks. There was plenty of hours and it was located in the most amazing part of England. Woolacombe. This place was going to be my home away from home…..
