3 days in Liepzig...no Internet in the hostel
August 1, 2008
Well, this is the last little bit of our five week tour here in Mittel Deustchland. We left Quedlinburg on the 30th and took a train to Liepzig. After getting settled into our hostel--which, by the way, is way the hell out in BFE--we came back to the city center and walked around and shopped for several hours. And now that we're actually sightseeing again, the weather has decided to run back up into the 90's and the humidity level is trying its hardest to kill us. Oh well, I guess 3 weeks of cool weather was a consolation prize for having to sweat the last week of the trip.
We had two more concerts in Liepzig, both in churches where Johanne Sebastian Bach was the music director. The first Church, Thomaskirche, is actually the place where Bach is buried. We sang 3 feet away from his tomb. The second church, Nikolaikirche, is an amazing Baroque style church that houses an organ with over 6800 pipes. After we sang at the Nikolaikirche, the organist was nice enough to play for us. I have a video of him playing Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor, which was awesome.
Liepzig is a really beautiful city but I'm convinced that I'm going to go because there are some great shops...can't wait till my truck get's sold so I have some extra cash.
We're actually in Dresden right now, and it is amazing. The architecture is incredible and there are places where they have rebuilt using the charred bricks left over from the original construction before the fire-bombing.
