2 and a half day in Vilnius

A few days exploring Vilnius with the boyfriend..Time away from the everyday stress:) Wine, good food and good company...

2 and a half day in Vilnius

Our flight didn't leave too early so we had time to relax and eat some breakfast before heading to the airport. Tarjei's dad drove us to the airport and handed us a gift with a 1000 Kr that we changed into the Currency for Lithuania at the airport and in the bag there were also chilli nuts, conjac chocolate sweets, pistachio nuts and 2 leather tags for our bags. What a surprise it was to look into that goodie bag, Tarjei's parents are such great and kind people.

We finally got to Vilnius and jumped into a cab that would bring us to our hotel. That was one ride we got since he seemed to be driving like his pants were on fire LOL...I'm getting used to these crazy taxi drives from the Eastern Europe part...:)

Once at the hotel we put our stuff in the room and went out to explore the city.

We headed towards the Old City and went into a Tourist information place to get ourself a Map of the city which is always helpful when you want to find your way around:) Time was around 1 PM so we had all day to look around. The weather was nice and the camera was with us too. The Old City was a nice area and i loved the narrow streets and the Linen stores they had in so many places. They are famous for their linen so i had to get a table cloth or two to bring with me home. I would have bought a lot more if it wasn't for money lol...Money is always a question when shopping abroad or even at home haha...  We walked around and decided to go to the KGB museum and on our way there we found a lovely wine shop full of French wines and some Portugese as well.
There was just so much to choose between that i couldn't think straight :) We got their card and went back on Saturday to buy some wine to bring with us home.  The prices were excellent and 4 bottles cost slightly more then 1 very good wine in Norway..Yes a big difference in price for sure. I bought 2 rose, 1 red and 1 white so i'm starting to have quite a collection from my travels now LOL..

The KGB museum was interesting and "different"- On the walls outside on the building there were names of people who had been victims of the KGB. Inside i couldn't even imagine what it must have been like to be held in a place like that, only from photos could you get an idea how much pain the people were in. A small room fittet 15-20 people which is for some people today a bedroom sized area.

There were some photos that were quite harsh and to think how they were locked up in a "padded" room in a straight jacket to the wall. The room was sound proof so other couldn't hear their pain. I would recommend to visit this place in Vilnius if you are interesed in History.  From the KGB museum we desided to go to the Europa shopping center which was just across the bridge and not too far from the musuem, walking distance most places:)

The Europa was quite big in size but once we got to the Acropolis shopping center the next day the Europa seemed like nothing lol.. We decided to take the buss to the Acropolis since it was quite a distance on the map to walk. We asked and they recommended us to take a bus:) Well, we got on bus 53 which should bring us to the shopping centre.

You know when you have that feeling of a never ending ride where this must be the place to get off before we go too far ? well that feeling had TArjei and he made me unsure of myself so we ended up getting off the bus. We then asked someone at the bus stop if it was far to the Acropolis but he didn't speak much English, but did his best to explain it was too far to walk. Then a student came along and i asked him. He spoke great English and asked us WHY did you get off LOL... I blamed it on Tarjei of course hahaha...we then got the bus 61 i believe or 62 and while we were on it the drive took quite a while so a good thing we got back on the bus..When we got closer we saw the shopping mal and realized how silly we were to get off when it was so obvious where to get off...

MOre to come soon....just got to do a little work before i get to sit down again and write about my trip....

Awesome blog Gudny. I never thought of the Eastern block as a vacation or tourist destination. But now everything is clear and how beautiful the architecture.

Expencive but charming place
We had read about the resturant on the internet before coming to Vilnius and it sounded like a very nice place.

We went there twice and when we first got there we spoke to one of the waiters asking if they had a table for two. He said in broken English.."follow that gay......guy" We laughed since we knew that he really wanted to say "guy" but made a mistake about the two. He was good about it and just smiled. Well we did follow the other waiter and got out table.
We ordered and later we got our food..What a sight it was. THe beef i had ordered was so tender i had water coming out of my mouth and to our food we had some Red Argentinian wine that tasted pretty good:)

Our last day in Vilnius we descided to go back and have one last meal there. THis time we meet the same waiter when we came in to their Resturant and asked if they had a table for two and showed him with our fingers. ONe should think that would have been an easy number but once again he managed to say something else.."table for 22". I think he might need some practice on his counting in English and the difference between gay and guy LOL..All in all i loved the food there but must say my second time there was a little disapointed on what i ordered. Great quality on the food and great service from the waiters:)

Average priced hotel in Vilnius
This hotel was situated in a very good walking distance to most attractions.
The hotel in it self was nice and friendly staff, but the breakfast they served i can honestly say SUCKED big time. It was so bad we didn't eat there again. I mean when even the TEA tasted bad something was wrong...
Nice location, easy access to most things so all in all i would stay there again but would stay away from the breakfast lol
