City of beautiful temples - country of smiles?

After getting a very comfortable 2.5 hour flight with Thai airlines (Asian airlines offer a much better flying experience at reasonable prices) we land in Bangkok's futuristic airport. We spent most of our time in Khao San area, which is the backpackers's paradise. Cheap guesthouses, loads (and loads and loads) of eating places and bars. On the other hand, the place is full of touts trying to sell you anything imaginable: from wooden frogs that produce a rather annoying sound, to tuk tuk rides, cheesy tshirts, posters and different types of "shows". "Hey you, where you go?" is probably engraved in the mind of every tourist that has visited bangkok as the most irritating sentence in the english language. I certainly didn't feel that this was the country of smiles, but then again I am very certain that khao san has nothing to do with the real Thailand.

We also saw some of the most intricate temples I have come across. With Hindu and Buddhist temples in Asia, you think it can't get any better until you visit the next country. The buddhist temples of Phao and Phra Kaew are huge, golden and with extremely fine details on the outside. The 46m long, golden-plated reclining Buddha must be one of the most impressive religious statues out there.

Last day was spent watching Travis live in Bangkok. An American, an Irish and a Greek watching a favourite Scottish band in Bangkok. It doesnt get must better than this...
