Baltimore's Washington Monument (1829)

The Baltimore Christmas Village (Chritmas Market) seemed like a good idea for a weekend getaway up to Baltimore. We should get to Baltimore more often, as it is only about an hour away.

A chilly December rain threatened and then came to pass as we drove up I-95 to Charm City as Balimore is known. The Sunday forecast was for clear weather, so, we decided we'd see the Christmas Market on Sunday. Saturday would be a good day to see the museum at the Maryland Historical Society and stay indoors. The Maryland Historical Society is near the Walters Art Gallery in the Mount Vernon neighborhood. I wrote about our trip to the Walters in April 2011 earier inthis blog.

The museum staff recomended an Italian deli nearby for lunch. We stoped there before visitng the musuem. That was good, as they mueum was totally capivating. We spent all afternoon in it, seeing Baltimore decorative arts and Maryland history and personages from the Revolutionary era to the present.

After the musuem visit, we checked in at the Fairfield Inn Downtown. The hotel was full of Christmas shoppers, as it is near the Inner Harbor shopping district. The hotel is also adjacent to Baltimore's Little Italy. It was easy to walk over to Germano's in the evening for dinner.  It was still misting, but that added to the atmosphere. In fact, we tarried in Little Italy to have dessert at Vaccaro's Italian pastry shop.

And I agree with what Bill wrote, Baltimore, due to proximity to Philly and D.C gets totally overlooked.

Baltimore tends to get overlooked as an east coast city with Washington, Philadelphia, and especially New York nearby. Which is a shame since it has a lot to offer.
