We found a lovely cheap guesthouse in Krabi town, called Swallow Guesthouse. It was only 180 Baht a night for a room. We had to share a bathroom, but the place seemed almost empty, and so we shared it with ourselves! Everything was new and clean; a fantastic bargain.
Part of the reason the guesthouse was so cheap was that it was located in Krabi town rather than on the beach. Still, we were happy with that, and the guesthouse was able to book us onto the trips we wanted, with pickup from outside the hotel.
We did the "four islands" trip one day, which involved a boat ride around to various beautiful sandy islands, a little snorkelling (not that great in terms of what you could see, compared to what we'd seen in Malaysia), and a picnic lunch. It was a very pleasant day out.
The other trip we did was a river kayaking trip around some caves containing prehistoric cave paintings. That was a really fun day out.
The night market in Krabi has some good local food stalls; we had dinner there one night. We also found a little backpackers cafe that did a good range of food, and showed a different film every night, so we went there quite a bit. We found it a good place to shelter from the heavy rain, of which we had quite a bit.
