Arriving in Singapore

What a strange experience it was to arrive in Singapore; we arrived in a country where everything worked the way we expected it to. We got off the plane, and there was a metro to take us into town; when we asked questions at tourist information they gave us answers, and the answers were right, and helpful.
So we ended up in the centre of Singapore looking for somewhere cheap to stay. Slightly disappointingly, after all I'd heard about Singapore, the first person I saw after exiting the metro was a guy throwing his cigarette butt on the ground. But the place was mostly far more clean than is natural.
We checked out a couple of places before we bumped into a guy who took us to a nice hostel, which actually turned out to be the one we'd been looking for! We were a little alarmed at the prices, and so went for the cheapest option, which was beds in the corridor! It was pretty hot at night on the bottom bunks, where the ceiling fan didn't really reach. And not being in a private room you felt you had to wear something!
We got some lunch from a really cheap noodle place downstairs. There are so many cheap places to eat in Singapore; it's bizarre when the rest of what you do can be so much more expensive than the rest of southeast Asia.
