Urquhart Castle - A Timeless Place
May 30, 1989
When I was on my tour of the UK in 1989. I took a side trip to Loch Ness. What's a trip to Scotland without looking for Nessie? Right? The ultimate site however, was the fantastic views of Urquhart Castle I encountered. As a child in the States, I remember countless books, articles, picutres, even TV episodes of "In Search Of..." dedicated to the Loch Ness monster. Most always, Urquhart Castle was seen in the background of the murky black and white images. Not the rich colors and contrasts of grass, stone and water. It impressed me greatly. My favorite picture was taken there on the grounds. The image of the dovecot and North Tower House backdropped by the Loch. A simple photo really, by I truely enjoy it. Urquhart Castle is situated along Loch Ness not far from the town of Drumnadrochit, where a Loch Ness Monster exhibit draws thousands every year. The castle is actually closer to a small place called Strone. Not to be confused with it's larger namesake to the south! So be careful when you Google. The whole thing was almost magical. Mist shrouded the loch when we arrived, so it was a little overcast and added to the mystery of the place. It's still hard to put into words even after all these years, of what I felt. It was just wonderful. If you ever get the chance, go.
