Working in Brussels
June 26, 2003
I have been working in Brussels for the last few days trying to get some deals closed before the end of the week. Today one of my co-workers and I drove to a meeting in Breda in the Netherlands to try to finish up one matter. We got back to Brussels around 4:30pm, and I worked until 7 when I had to go pick up another co-worker at the Brussels Airport. We had a great dinner that night at the Belga Queen (reviewed below).
Belga Queen
The Belga Queen in Brussels is not your typical restaurant. It is housed in a former bank building, so from the outside looks like a solid, conservative, grey business institution. Inside, however, is a different story. The restaurant is cool and elegant, yet very hip. The bar has a blue neon lighting scheme that gives it a frosted appearance. You can chose to go to a beer bar, a cigar bar, an oyster bar -- or just a bar bar.
The restaurant prides itself on using the best locally sourced ingredients -- and many of the dishes are cooked with Belgian Beers. They are well known for their seafood dishes, but also have many vegetarian and meat dishes as well.
I started with the Scallops St. Jacques, followed by the Sole Meuniere. Both were wonderful. I passed on the beer, but had a great French white burgundy that paired quite nicely.
If you go, you must check out the unisex bathrooms. The doors to the stalls are clear when they are opened, but magically frost over when closed. Oh the stories they could tell!
