Most of ya'll don't have pools this blue! This is somewhere in the middle of the ocean.
Friday night I left the marina in West Palm and found an anchorage for the night. Saturday morning I left West Palm around 7am and headed straight East towards the Bahamas. This was the first time that I had been outside of the ICW and into the open ocean and the next piece of land was approximately 50 miles ahead of me. To be completely honest, it was a little intimidating but exciting at the same time. Apparently I read the tide charts wrong because when I came out of the inlet, the tide was going out - not a bad thing in itself - but the wind was blowing in. That meant some pretty good sized waves. I really only had to deal with that for about an hour though. Once I was well clear of the inlet, the seas calmed down to nice, smooth swells of about 4 foot.

From that point on, all I really had to do was set the autopilot, make sure the Gulf Stream wasn't taking me too far north, watch out for freighters and relax.

I envisioned the trip to be much more stressful than it was. But honestly I was WAY more stressed in the ICW. Out there in the open ocean there was nothing in sight. Nothing. I would occasionally see a large ship off in the distance but never anything remotely close enough to require much more attention than a glance in that direction every 10 or 15 minutes. In fact, I think I even fell asleep for about 20 minutes. Nice and uneventful. Exactly as planned.

Somewhere around 4:30 that afternoon I saw the first glimpses of the Bahamas on the horizon. There was also yet another storm coming up. It hit me about an hour outside of Settlement Point but looked much worse than it was. Just a little shower and it was over. By 7pm I had the anchor down just outside of the Old Bahama Bay Marina and was joined shortly by a few other boats who had apparently come across from Florida as well.

So now the 'hard part' was over. No more deep ocean passages to get to the Abacos, which was still a few days away for me.
