As I didn't want to stay in Funchal I booked a hotel located in Garajau. It's a little town located west of Funchal along the coast . The town is also focussed on tourism but it's certainly not that busy as Funchal which is about a 9km-drive from there. There is a bus station that can take you to the capital and even quite cheap, hink it was 1,5 euro. I did a few short walks in Garajau and on my way I saw a little sign showing 'Christo Do Rei' to the right so I followed the steps. This would lead me to a statue of Jesus Christ watching over the ocean on a big cliff. If you followed the main road further going down It would lead you to a little rocky beach and at that time of the day I was the only one being there.
Madeira is really a place that goes up and down again and again but therefore I think it has its charm. As I live in Belgium I'm not used to these 'heights and dephts' but I loved it! It's also quite ingenious how roads have been built and cross the surface. Must have been quite a job! The little white houses are very lovely too and it gives you a true almost Mediterranean feeling. Madeira doesn't get that much attention in the news because it's so safe and so relaxed and there is saying that everyone who has been to Madeira want's to go back once in a lifetime. It's true for me allright.
